I have been tinkering around with an old 5 hp johnson, the green ones with the built in tank i believe it is a TN. I have done everything to it. I cleaned the carb, she gets a good spark, Its getting fuel to the plugs and it has compression. I believe the compression was 50 in one and 45-46 in the other cylinder. Me and my buddie timed the motor. I am just baffled when it comes to this one.

The compression seems to be low, it wouldn't start with that kind of compression. You need to find out why, pull the head and check the gasket, could be blown.

compression does sound a bit low, but I am uncertain what kind of compression you are to get with that size motor.

as for cleaning the carbs, did you soak it in a cleaner or simply spray the carbs?

Also, be sure you are not getting too much fuel and are flooding the motor or vice versa. if you have needle valves, be sure to check the needle valves on the carb and see if they are adjusted properly (in the top secret files on how to do this).

Re: why wont she start

for a motor that age, and rope start, compression is not way out of line. i sometimes remove the recoil starter, and use a socket in a 18volt drill, turn the motor over that way. saves my arm, and turns the motor faster, to start.

I have done everything to it.

Forget that, fisher. There is something you haven't done.

Do "Outboard won't start" in the Top Secret file. Let us know what you find.
