2 other ways to secure
1st is to filter mac adress's
2nd is to not broadcast the wireless networks name

Hiding the SSID is a pretty poor way of being secure. Any hacker that uses InSSIDer or NetStumbler will find hidden SSIDs in seconds.

MAC addresses can be cloned also so MAC filtering is also pretty worthless and makes it a pain in the butt adding people that come to your house that want to get on your wireless.

Use WPA2 and that's really the best you can do.

OK, so how do you do that? I don't even know where to begin. I've had concerns about this in a vague way but see why it might be a good idea.

post your router's make,model#...I will then post instructions on how to secure your router. For anyone not computer savy, there is a program called Teamviewer which is very easy to install and I can remotely hook to your computer and lock it for ya,while you watch and learn.

Passwords are nothing but detterents like locks on doors. They need to be used but a real hacker could care less. The level of threat determines the amount of security you require. Usually a simple password is all that's required to keep the neighbors out.

No offense intended to anyone, but the irony of an online Forum topic about wireless security, and then an unknown net acquaintance suggesting that you let him into your computer to solve the security threat is just too much for me to leave alone. I know you're trying to help, but that's funny right there. We just need a newbie post asking for banking information :D Carry on . . . :)

I named my wireless network "Police Surveillance Van #564". Keeps the neighbors on their toes :p

If you do a google search on "wireless network security", you'll find some easy to understand and helpful articles to get you started.

Yup, will do that too. I will check instructions that may be posted here, but I don't turn my computer over unless I know who I am turning it over to.

Thanks and no offence intended to CobiaXL, but I would take advantage of the first part of your offer.

Read the manual!!!!

Having someone surf child pron on your wireless router is not the only problem you might have by not securing it. If a tool like wireshark is used, anyone can see the wireless communication between your PC and router. What this means: you would be surprised the amount of info that is broadcast. All passwords, bank account info, credit card numbers, user names, and etc. are broadcast and can be captured.

To prove this point to my neighbor, I had him log on to his AOL account using his always unsecure router, while I was at home next door. The story: He left his router unlocked for another neighbor to use and even offered it to me when I first moved in before comcast set me up. Okay so back to the rest: I came over to his house and told him his username and password to access his AOL account. The next words out of his mouth were "show me how to secure it".

So if I asked you a question on how could I make bike riding safer, would you answer me with "walk instead" as your advice?
