I have a question, why can't I run my I/O with muffs on and motor up. I can see the water coming out the out drive and the motor is not over heating. BTW, I have a closed cooling system if that makes a difference.

Re: Why

You will ware out your u-joints. The shaft going from the engine to the outdrive is always spinning when the motor is running regardless of weather its in gear or not.

Re: Why

You can, just don't run the engine in the trailer position.

Re: Why

I routinely did this 2 years ago not knowing any better. Luckily I figured it out before too much damage was done, but the u-joint assembly literally grinds on itself and it's obvious. Much more of that and a big failure was coming.

Re: Why

I see ya made it in here Roff.... already causing trouble tho... LOL

You technically can run your engine with the (alpha) drive all the way up but it isn't great for it.... I sometimes operate my boat with the drives all the way up when I don't want to bust my props on a shallow rocky bottom

BTW.. the muffs have nothing at all to do with it

You're perfectly "safe" running with the drive "up" as long as the UP angle is no more than the maximum LEFT/RIGHT angle.

The U-joints don't "know" the "difference" between UP, LEFT or RIGHT.........

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... The Motor should be firmly bolted to the transom, 'n stringers,....

As noted above,... Runnin' the Drive, above the trim limit, tweaks the u-joints,...

I did and thanks, these guys are ok. I posted a few question in 'thehulltruth' and no one answered.

I guess I was thinking you can run with the motor trimed up why not run it in the drive way with the motor in the up position. I should say... I don't put it in gear, just neutral. I normally start the boat in the drive way before I take her out on the river. I would rather have problems in the driveway over the open water. I have my answer, LOL, and to be sure I would rather get beat up a little over ignored and wreck my motor doing something stupid.

I tell you, this boat is great, smokin fast. Just a little leery of a 4 banger.

Re: Why

Whether you put it in gear or not doesn't matter as the ujoints are always spinning.

Them 4 bangers are usually good motors. Good fuel economy too!

As stated above, in or out of gear doesn't matter. The u-joints are spinning regardless.

I run mine in the driveway too before I head out. It only takes a few seconds to trim the drive down a little to save wear and tear on parts you really would rather not have to replace.

Re: Why

whatever you do Roff, don't tell these guys it's a 3.7.... they'll beat ya up for that too LOL

BTW we have a bit of fun here but for the most part, it's only good intentions and good help.... V-20 is a great sight but there are WAY more people here and it isn't specialized to one specific boat.

3.7?
My buddy has been keeping his alive for 2 decades. And besides all what I have heard, his has been a very reliable powerplant. Hell, he has towed my boat with the 3.7......

I agree, all this good advice. I am out on the water in the morning and for sure when I spark it up the in driveway and will put the motor down. I have been boating for 40 years. My boats or the boats I used were already in the water. Up until this year I have never trailered a boat. Forums like this have made life a lot easer and have saved me a little coin. So I take all the advice good and bad. I'll let you know if I catch anything, pickerel (walleye) fishing LOL.
