I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED AN OLD SKEETER DECK BOAT
IT IS A 16FT. TRI-HULL WITH A '72 MERCURY 50 HP OUTBOARD MOTOR. PUT IT IN THE SHOP AND HE CLEANED THE CARBS AND CHANGED OUT THE FUEL FILTER AND REPLACED A HOSE. BECAUSE IN THE BEGINING THE BOAT WOULD SHUT DOWN WHEN PUT INTO FORWARD. WELL, IT GOES INTO FORWARD NOW BUT, FEELS LIKE IT IS BARELY MOVING WHEN PUT WIDE OPEN. I HAVE THE LEAST BIT KNOWLEDGE WHEN IT COMES TO MOTORS. ALL I WANT TO DO IS GO OUT FISHING. CAN YOU HELP ME?

Check your puel pump diaphram. Squeeze the primer bulb a few times and see if it picks up.

Make sure your throttle plates are opening to full horizontal at WOT (Wide Open Throttle)position of throttle lever and are synchronized.

And please turn your caps lock off. ;)

Is the engine running at peak revs with the boat not moving? Might be a spun prop hub if that's the case. If the engine isn't making the revs, give Bear's suggestions a try. Also, check to see that you have spark on all four cylinders...
- Scott

Re: WIDE OPEN AND BARELY MOVING

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I just got back to work and received the messages so I have not tried your suggestions yet. I forgot to mention that the mechanic said that the 4th cylinder loses compression. Could this play a role in my speed capabilities? When I placed most of the weight at the front of the boat, although it takes awhile, it does eventually plane out. But it is still slow moving.

KJG - Well ---- yeah - -- - if you have a 4 cyl motor and one ain't puttin out - - it sorta follows that you will not have the power that your are supposed to. What were the compression readings?

By the way welcome! Lotsa help available here.
