I have a 89 115 mercury, with a start up in the early morning my motor took a couple of tries to start up and when i got the it started it stuck at 4500 rpms screaming and did not let up so i shut her down and tried again to get the same result. I checked into the situation and noticed several things that i missed when purchasing the used boat but none linked to the problem. It is a inline 4cyl and has 4 carbs. I think my problem lies in the electric choke which clicks once and loudly when you hold the key in now. although the oil injecter has been taken off and nothing pluged to prevent vacum. some one help me.

Re: wide open in idle

I assume your fast idle lever on the top rear of the control is closed. If it is, the controls are probably sticky and need to be cleaned and lubricated.

Re: wide open in idle

thanks for the reply, I have been told to check the throttle cable but while under the cowl you can watch when the throttle goes down my lever under the cowl goes down also I do think it is the choke or the diaphram for the throttle response cause everything mechanical works in sink. but a lube job is not a bad idea...
