Just wanted to get an idea of what wot should be on a 1978 351 w, stringer 800?

That's kinda what I had heard. Not that I want to but how safe is it to hold it there..... what do you normaly cruise at?

Well first off you have to keep it there a few times to get your prop selection right. After that the manufacturers are somewhat varied on this, and it has changed over time a little. OMC used to say you can keep it at WOT 100% of the time, but that wear would increase. Merc says something similar. Volvo says cruise speed should be 400 RPM below your WOT RPM. Not the range, your specific WOT RPM when you let her run as fast as she'll go. All use the same engines except that Volvo never ran Ford. I personally don't think you will really ever wear one out unless you are a commercial guy or you don't maintain properly. With that said, abuse is never good . . .

Thanks for the impute. So far I have been working out a few kinks and we have just been on our local lake. next weekend we will be hitting the sound out in some open water. we will probly be covering a lot more ground. I will try out some different speeds and see what works best for cruising in old girl....

When I am out by myself or with a light load, I like to run it up and sit there for a while... as long as the mechanical condition of the engine is good.. these rpm's are safe... now.. gas consumption is a completely different thing.. you can empty a small runabout tank (30 gallons or less) in a few hours running around at top speed - most of the time I am pulling skiers or tubers, and I sit in the 3-3.5K range...

Does not really matter much, but, watch that "never" qualifier. The AQ190 is a Ford 302, dizzy up front and everything

Nice. thanks for the info.... we are not too worried about fuel... it is what it is and the boat carries 80 gallons so we should be good there. I just wanted to run it through the pases without doing any damage and there are a few places we wanted to go that were a ways away so a little extra speed wouldn't hurt...... thanks guys.
