Wierd gas, real nasty

Ok i dont know if this is the right place to put this but i have a question about gas. i emptied the gas out of one of my tanks and put some of it in a glass jar. it sat for a while and when i looked at it there was a thick syrup like substance at the bottom. just wondering what that was out of curiosity. maybe phase seperation, the eythonol came out of the gas?

I dont know what it is but I can tell you this. I hope your tank is small because that stuff is hazardous waste

Those tanks need to be drained, rinsed and refilled with clean fresh fuel. I would not start the engines with that crap in the tank or dirty fuel wont be your only problem.

yeah i know ha it was bad and thats why i drained it, been sittin for a year. about 5 gallons but i burned it in the backyard yesterday

Man your lucky there was only 5 gallons in there. I'd try to purge all the fuel lines and replace the water seperators before using the boat.

yeah i need to get a fuel water sep for it. its a small outboard though, do you think that the pump would be able to pull fuel through it? i hate dealing with this ethanol gas its a pain

you're describing phase seperation.

I understand they make water seperator filters for small motors now; previously the fule pumps weren't strong enough

A 10 micron water seperating filter is generally a good idea but some 4 strokes already have one on the motor and don't run right with adding another one. Since you didn't mention which motor you have it's kinda hard to give an answer. If it's a small 2 stroke the you should be fine.

yeah its a 15 hp 2 stroke evinrude and ill look around for a small one to put on it.

So that was phase separation? Well thats kinda cool i've never seen anything like it. Thanks guys!
