First of all YES it does do something special. I pumps the oil in from the correct fill hole which you can't do. Wooow cool little pump huh.

And even if it didn't IT'S $10!!!

:mad:What ever dude.. How is it going to ruin the gearset.. Does the pump magically do something special??? I got the trick from a fella that has worked I/O for longer than I have been alive..: If you can prove some how that it will mess it up I would like to hear it..
Nah, you do what u want to do. It's your drive. But, for the benefit of some others here who own Cobra's & aren't sure of the way to properly fill a Cobra, which is explained in the original OMC shop manuel, save yourself some grief, buy the pump & fill it the right way. Which is from the middle plug. I've had my Cobra since '92 & have been doing it that way since day one. I haven't had to replace the gearset yet. So I must be doing something right. I won't be paying for your drive when it dynamites. So, it's no sweat off my ***** one way or the other. Have a nice day.

Re: Wierd ticking noise coming from Cobra outdrive.

Several years ago my brother took his Four Winns 211 Liberator (1987 OMC 460 King Cobra) to a Four Winns dealer to have them "service" the drive!!

They filled it like a Mercruiser I suspect....... from the bottom....... I don't think ANY dealer would have someone stupid enough to try to fill any modern drive from the top........ It only made it about half way around the lake before it completely seized!! He said the water was boiling and steaming around the drive after the engine quit!!

Yeah.....you go for it!! Just completely BLOW OFF the accepted and OMC recommended procedure!!

There's still a LOT of people out there in radio land that need "parts" drives!!

(although I don't know what parts could be salvaged from a destroyed drive!!)

Re: Wierd ticking noise coming from Cobra outdrive.

Are you guys saying that could have damaged my drive using the method I followed?

1- pump from bottom til it reaches the middle.
2- pump from middle til it reached the top.

Should I drain the drive again and redo the fill up?

Thanks for the help guys!

I don't know, it's up to you. Do you want peace of mind knowing that u followed the factory recommended procedure, or do u want to risk it? How long are we looking at, 30 min. to do it right? It's your call.

There are a LOT of people that think that this is an "OK" way of doing it. There's also a lot of people right here that claim to have done it successfully.

I believe them.

The OMC PROCEDURE is outlined above in a previous post.

The other procedure may work.......(well, it appears to work)

But I don't fully understand why someone would deviate from the OMC recommended procedure.

What I don't understand is why someone would deviate fromthe OMC procedure when it is sooooo simple. It's not like they're trying to prevent taking the engine out to do something.

And why people would want to skimp out on buying a $10 pump when they're talking about a $2-4K drive? It's 10 freaking dollars.

There's a guy on the Cadillac forum that bought a brand new $80K 565 HP STS-V customized by luftenhuger (or however you say/spell it). He was having all these problems and was trying to call it a lemon. Come to find out he refused to put premium gas in it. He said there was no way he would pay premium gas prices.

One of my friends just bought a very nice buschmaster AR-15. But he always wants to shoot those POS Wolf non reloadable (because there made out of peoples old out drive casings :) ) cartridges out of it.

Re: Wierd ticking noise coming from Cobra outdrive.

Well good news!
Today I started up the engine to see if it was still making the noise and it was GONE!!!
So now I have no rattling / ticking noise!
I don't know what happened but the problem just seemed to have went away.
Maybe the air bubbles in the drive have risen to the top?
I'm glad it went away.

I do have a pump and I did use it .
Maybe not the correct way and air bubbles got trapped in the drive.
Test run is looking good for this weekend!
Thanks everyone and safe boating!

Re: Wierd ticking noise coming from Cobra outdrive.

I've always done it the official OMC way with no issues, I have used the Merc High Performance Gear lube (the OMC stuff is not so available) and it works great in the Cobra drive....

Check the fluid level in the drive again.
I usually leave the dipstick out for a few hours with the drive setting level so any air can escape after i do a gear oil change.
It should have held 64 ounces of lube.
