So we are going to bite the bullet and get a 54 inch panasonic pavtcp-54sp.
So one of the things we need for this to watch net flix and blue ray DVD's is a box of some type.

Not really worried about the game thing that much just want some understanding who's who in the zoo???

Re: Wii vs xbox

If you just want to do Netflix, get a Roku box. http://www.roku.com/

Still want the blue ray and game option, as well the wireless router (WIFI) and the remote control is a nice addition.
BTW, which one has those options???? :D

As was said I know jack doo-doo about these things, I need some input.

Re: Wii vs xbox

No blu-ray in the WII so there ya go. I think only a PS3 has that.

I have a Dell PC hooked up to my TV. Once you have a computer hooked up to your TV, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. You can put a BluRay drive in one of those too, watch Youtube and other internet videos, watch stuff you downloaded, etc etc.

Re: Wii vs xbox vs PS3

So our kids have had a Wii for going on 3 or 4 years now. It's great up until the kids get to be about 9 or so and especially if their friends have older brothers with an xbox which makes the Wii childs play to even 9 year olds. The concept is neat (less so now than when they first came out) and you can watch netflix these days as well as modify it to act as a standard dvd player and also log onto the internet to the homebrew stuff. We are now cosidering getting our oldest an xbox this Christmas since he is beyond the Wii. The Wii games are very cartoonish with their style. I don't quite understand the differences between the xbox and sony playstation 3 though. Are the PS3 games actually in high def since it has a blu ray player built in (ie the games come on bluray discs) or is the built in bluray just a nice side novelty for your bluray movies? I know the xbox used to come with the old, dead technology 'HD Dvd' player.

I was actually thinking about a Roku too but the website is vague as to what content is free. I think we are the last cable hold outs on earth since I won't spend money on TV and it'd be nice to have some content beyond network tv.

we have a ps3 and a wii. we use ps3 more than all. my sons say xbox has best grafix, but ps3 is more reliable and has cheaper games and blu-ray features.

Here would be my take.. Get a good internet connected blueray that will allow you to do Netflix. This player can also give you features such as Pandora and Movie options such as Cinema Now or Vudu.

The PS3 has the Blueray, but requires a disk for the Netflix. Xbox has a Netflix app onboard and you are also required to have a XBOX Gold membership or what ever it is called to get netflix.

As for XBOX of PS3, all I have is XBOX and WII and I much prefer the XBOX due to its much much better graphics.

So in my view, go for the BR player AND the XBOX. Go big or Go home..

As has been said, if the kids are >10 years old, forget Wii. Not to mention it is not capable of better than 480p video output (same as DVD, which in NOT considered "high def" BTW), so its graphics cannot take full advantage of an HD TV set.

XBOX has serious reliability issues. Plus AFAIK you still have to buy a separate drive for it to do Blu-Ray discs. Plus you have to subscribe to a special, additional Micro$oft service above and beyond Netflix to stream Netflix.

If you want Netflix streaming, Blu-Ray and gaming all in one reasonably affordable package, PS3 is a no-brainer.

BTW, both XBOX and PS3 games are as "high definition" (i.e., all the way up to 1080p, same as Blu-Ray discs) as your TV and the type of video hookup you use (e.g., component vs. HDMI) will allow. Also both now have add-on motion-controlling technologies, so Wii now has nothing unique.

We got a BR player from Best But for $149 (I think), which streams Netflix, and my son (14) sold his Wii to get an XBox360. He can stream netflix, but I'm not sure about BR capabilities. From a gaming standpoint, XBox is where it's at.

Re: Wii vs xbox vs PS3

Ok so it seems that xbox is the way to go from a pure gaming perspective. I am gathering that it was cool to have a Bluray built in to the ps3 when Bluray first came out and they were $300. Like some said above you can get an off brand Bluray player with internet connectability, pandora, etc for under $100 these days so there is no huge draw to the ps3.
So then my son's flat panel tv is an earlier model that only goes to 720P that I bought when 1080p was new and ultra expensive. His 720p tv that the system will be connected to doesn't have an HDMI plug in but has every other connection you can imagine. How do you get 720P from the xbox to the tv without the ability to use an HDMI cable? I want to make sure I have all the cables needed to start using it right away Christmas day.

Looks as we will go with the PS3, it has 250 gig hard drive so storing streaming video, music games etc will not be a problem.
And the blue ray player is a nice addition, all 1080p.

RBH, just keep in mind that you need to stick a disc in it to use Netflix.. To me that would be a bummer.

Is the net flix not downloaded to your computer and then the PS3 is used as a wireless gateway thingy????

Or avoid the computer all together and just use the wireless router to the
PS3???

What disk???

I will second this.

Re: Wii vs xbox vs PS3

I was trying to find a link to send you to to show the way it works but it appears that my information may be old. Last year when we bought the XBOX, the WII and PS3 required a disk to be inserted to to NF. Now it appears that is no longer true..

I would then be partial to the PS3 as it has everything you want..
