Awesome!! Congratulations!! The lake (and boating) will keep that new one by your side until they are out of the house. Guaranteed. If you ask any of our three where they want to go on vacation they will say House Boat on Lake Mead. ;)

I've heard the wind makes Houseboating not quite as desirable on Mead as it is in other places (like Shasta).

Not that wind isn't a problem everywhere, but I've heard it's more prevalent on Mead. Any thoughts on the issue? I'd love to take a houseboat trip there, but I'd hate the wind to ruin my vacation...

Wilkin250r,

Yes, wind is the concern at Mead. My personal experience over the last 20 years is that there are always good times of each day and some completely awesome days over the course of a houseboat trip. I've probably been houseboating there 7 - 8 different trips and had numerous long weekends where we stayed elsewhere but boated every day. Our houseboat trips have always been July, August or September. I've found that the wind is less prevalent those months.

I have also held houseboats off beaches in the middle of a thunderstorm in the dark  . Finding a good cove is very important and tying up properly is also a big deal. Last year, it was probably this week, we did a seven day Houseboat trip. We had three solid days of glass at Sandy Point (east side). Maybe my luck has just been good. I don't think I would do a houseboat in May or June though ;) . Here's another pic that shows some excellent water, days with good stretches of water like this are probably the rule as opposed to the exception.

If the water is at 1180' or higher, this is 20 minutes by boat from the Grand Canyon and you can power up 15 -20 miles in. Best boating I have ever experienced.

Also, for what it is worth, the worst Houseboat trip I ever had was at Shasta  . Rained for three solid days the 1st week of September. Go figure.

I agree with QC. The 1st 2 weeks in Sept. are absolutely perfect. No monsoon storms, nice temperate weather, but the lake is still warm from the Summer. Wind storms on Lake Mead are prevalent in the Summer but they are almost always short. Usually last no more than a half hour or so in the afternoon. I like to go up into Grand Canyon where the canyon walls protect you from the wind. Also if you choose your camp carefully you can have a shaded camp nearly the whole day.
