Will 2001 3.0 mercruiser engine work with '67 controls?

I am restoring a '67 Thunderbird and would like to keep the look and feel of the original controls and gauges. However, I need to replace the engine and outdrive and would like to get a newer 3.0L engine and alpha drive. I have a line on a good 2001 complete engine. Is it possible to keep the original controls and gauges with the newer engine and drive?? I am mechanically inclined and capable of machining/fabricating parts and rewiring if necessary. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

You can buy a new boat side wireing harness that would make connecting all the guages and key swich to the new motor in and easy way

wireing the NEW trim pump to the old style buttons my take a bit of thinking so the trim limit works :D

Guys, thank you very much for the info - it is much appreciated. The old engine has an 8-pin main connector and it is my understanding that the engines have a 10-pin connector. I am not sure what this means, but am willing do what I have to do if it is possible. I mainly want to find out if it can be done before I sink the money into the newer engine (new outdrive will also be requried). I will be looking at the new engine this weekend. The old trim switch is a seperate panel with its own key. This is kind of strange, but I guess that is how they did it back then. Everything looks really cool though - nice chrome etc. That is why I want to keep it.

The engine serial # is: 2051166, outdrive #: 2067017. I believe the outdrive is a type I. I am not sure how to post a picture here...

I like the idea of getting a new harness and wiring that the existing gauges. I think the guy said that he has the harness for the engine so that might work out well.
