Will a Counter Rotating Prop solve my problem?

Hello...I recently bought a 1976 28ft Aqua Patio pontoon boat. I am hoping that someone might know the answer to my question.

The problem is that when you put it in forward it goes in reverse. We took it to a shop and was informed that we have a counter rotating foot. All cables were checked and nothing is connected wrong.

My question is will a Counter Rotating Prop solve our problem? It is a 1976 70hp Johnson 3cyc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Yeah, if you have a counter rotating unit a counter rotating or left hand prop, will get you going in the proper direction. Are you sure that you don't have a standard gearbox and a left hand prop now?

Thank you for your info. To be honest I really have no idea. This is my first boat. How could I tell? Don't mean to bother but thanks for the help.

With the motor off and in neutral; face the prop and turn it clockwise with your hand. The blade angle should be clear as to whether this would push water towards you or pull it away from you.

If the blades are pushing water towards you when you turn it clockwise then you have a right hand rotation prop.

If the blades are pushing water away from you (towards the boat) when you turn it clockwise then you have a left hand (or counter rotating if you prefer) prop.

Cheers.

The only problem is that OMC never made a counter rotating gearcase for a 70 hp motor.

The early model 3 cylinder gear cases did shift oposite from the late ones. Your issue is
you have the wrong shift linkage on the powerhead for the gear case you have on the motor. Or you have an aftermarket control that will shift either direction.

It really is just that simple.
