I am wondering if the steering cable from a 2000 johnson fit a 1977 johnson?

I don't think so. Seems Johnson/evinrude changed cable types in 1979, so there are pre-79 and post-79 types.

Not something you want to frankenstien, hook-up at helm and motor, plus length are important. Do some research and get the correct cable for your current set-up.

I was just in the iboats store and none of the steering cables have particular year or maker of engine they fit so I believe the engine end is the same, the problem will come at the helm.( the thing the steering wheel is attached to)

So what type of steering do you have on the boat, you may need to stick your head up under the console or possibly there are markings on the cable itself.

If the baot is a 77 also it could be a rack and pinion in which case it is best to just get a whole new system.

Forgot the most basic question, why are you changing the cable?

Brain fart....

It's the control cable, ie throttle or shift cable that was pre- or post- 79, not the steering. My mistake :facepalm:

Just the same, get the right cable for your setup.

The size of the steering tube has not changed. Yes the steering will fit. If you are swapping motors some, need to be lifted and moved to the side to get the old steering cable rod out of the tilt tube. Welcome to iboats!

The boat is a 2000 i blew the motor and picked up a 1977 johnson to get me by while i fix the other motor, i was just wondering if the boats steering cable including cable will slide into the tube of the 1977, it looks as thou it will, i am having trouble getting the old steering cable out of the 1977 i just cut off the cable so it sticks out the the tube 6inches, any help to get it out would be great!
