will alpha 1 - gen 2 gimbal housing replace 888 MR?

Hi everyone,


I have a 888 mercruiser sterndrive, i hvae dismantled the gimbal housing and it is in pretty bad shape and the parts are totalling up to be quite expensive. I have looked online and can get a brand new transom kit with gimbal housing, etc.

My question is are the mounting holes through the transom the same? i dont fancy having to drill new holes. also i was still planning on using my 888 leg as its in good condition, i assume that it will fit a alpha 1 - gen 2 bimbal housing?

Nothing Gen II is compatible with anything not Gen II...

The holes will be slightly different, and you'll need 2 new ones at the top, but as the 888 is a Ford engine, and the last 888 was 1977, that will also mean the rear engine mounts will not line up either, and the MC-1 leg will not fit.... (you have an MC-1 leg, not an MR)..

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... As noted by Chris, a Gen.II is not what you need,...

An Alpha 1, can be adapted to work, Gen.II, No way...

You could also have problems adapting the exhaust Y for the Ford to anything newer than your MC-1 drive gimbal housing.

If you are going to put it in, you can rebuild it yourself too. Good used ones on Ebay, and you can get all the overhaul parts on Iboats. I replaced on last year, and might do my other this winter. Going to the Alpha one means you need to drill new transom holes, and move the engine forward 2 inches.
