...on a Merc 1 upper. The Alpha 1 lower is mid 80's and the Merc 1 (MR?) is a '78.

The older lowers use a preload pin on the drive shaft, the newer, sometime in the 80 don't. You will need an experts advice on this one.

true, but has nothing to do with the upper

i believe when ordering replacement lowers from merc or seirra, you can only get alpha one lowers, the I lower is NLA

there may be some rear pin alignment issues but other than that you should be in the clear

Should bolt up just fine .A Series 1 fine spline will accept the R.MR,Alpha1 types.Pre 74`s ( ?)with the coarse spline only accept a coarse spline driveshaft and do not interchange with the late model drives
Alpha GEN II`s only accept GEN II types..

Ayuh,... It should work Just Fine...
I believe the spline count changed earlier in the 70s...
