Will any Alpha One Gen II Outdrive Work as a Replacement?

As many of you now know, my outdrive is toast. I found a suitable replacement, or so I think. I will be replacing the outdrive, my engine is a 3.0L 115HP (1992). My question is, what gear ratio is this, and do I have to get the same gear ratio or will another one suffice? I am not sure what the gear ratio is of this replacement outdrive yet, waiting for the guy to get back with me. I just don't know if the gear ratios make that much of a difference. Also, to avoid any further issues, is there a way I can look and tell that the outdrive is bad while it is off the boat?

Long story short, met the guy on Craigslist. He lives 3 hours away, so we are meeting at a halfway point. I don't want to drive all this way, pay for the outdrive, only to find out it's in the same condition as mine.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Thank you for the quick reply. I believe it came off a 4 or 6 cylinder, a 94 boat model. I definitely agree about the risky business, I will try to see if the guy will guarantee it, and if not, I will walk away. I don't have that kind of money to be blowing on junk. He said he just parted out his 94, and that the lower gear oil looks good and no water in it. But then again, the lower gear oil in my busted outdrive can look brand new if I flushed it and tried to sell my outdrive as a good one. Man, whatever happened to honesty and loyalty? I could never rip someone off on anything and go to sleep at night. Hopefully this guy's the same way. . .

Beyond checking to make sure it goes in gear & possibly pressure checking it, there is no guarantee just looking at it.....;)
It is important that you make sure it is a 2:1 ratio or it won't work....;)
I hope you are saving a considerable amout by buying used as you can get a new aftermarket for about $1300....;)

Thank you for the replies. The ratio is 1.98:1. So, pretty much it won't work, huh? The guy was asking $450, with a stainless prop, but I already have one so I was probably not gonna take it and save a few. Oh well, better luck next time.

that is a 4 banger drive.1.98:1 is the same as 2 to 1.
