Hi, i have a 1960 75hp evinrude v4. It will not staying running when it does start. Replaced starter so it cranks good, compression is 85 psi on all cyls not sure but I think that is good at least should run. I cleaned out the fuel tank, carbs with new needle and seat, the float needs replace starting to come apart. It seems as thow one side is running better than the other. standing behind the engine the left side does not get near as hot as the right or driver side. If i put gas or a squirt bottle into the carbs mainly the driver side carb it seems to start and run good and that side starts to heat up. but it will not stay running and the primor bulb seems to loose pressure. should the fuel pump diapram be replaced. While it running I have a spark tetser on cyl 2 and it never looses spark. The engine has had a few good backfires, Can the reeds be of any problem. the thing just does not want to reve up. realy does not want to stay running.

Put a timing light on all the cylinders and make sure they all fire. Two cylinders are controlled by each set of points, so make sure both are gapped correctly.

If the spark is good, you likely have a clogged or misadjusted carb. The intake manifold likely crosses the fuel mixture, so the right carb barrel feeds the left cylinders. Clean it up and then try to adjust the low speed needles.

I'd say there is a problem in the carburetor as evidenced by the fact that it takes off when you squirt gas down the throat. Make sure you got the high speed orfices clean. They are deep in the holes behind the drain screws.

Everybody says the primer bulb won't stay firm. It is not supposed to. It's a matter of interpretation what "firm" means. When you pump it till the carb gets full there is no place for any more gas to go, so the bulb gets firm when you try to mash it. When the motor is running, conditions within the bulb and hose change from pressure to suction. That means there is no longer any pressure in the bulb to make it firm. But a mash or two on it should again firm it up...temporarilly.

Thanks I will take the carb off tonight and try to free up the high speed side.
does each side have its own high speed circuit. I did notice when i had the
carb apart i could only blow air threw one of the holes for high speed if im right. they are dirrectly behind the drain screws. should each hole be able to flow air freely.

That motor should have a two barrel carb. Both barrels should have identical high and low speed jets. If air flows on one side, it should flow on the other side.

Ok i feel like a dumb *** I took my carb off again probly the 4th time. I found the side that was not working high speed jet clogged after i removed the plugs for that side passages. I did not see or know that jet was all the way down in there. With that said I have a few questions 1. do you know where i can find those plugs that press in for the fuel passages. 2. and does any sealer need to be put on thim when i drive them back in. 3.What is the correct fuel ratio mix 4. and compression numbers for this engine. 1960 75hp.........also where to find a new float cant find one anywhere for this old......THANK YOU VERY MUCH...........
