Will not shift into reverse

I have a 1988 OMC Cobra. It will shift into forward but not reverse. I disconnected the cables and they work fine forward and reverse. It overheated last time out and after changing the impeller and housing, plugs, points, cap, rotor, and fuel filters, it runs fine and shifts normally into forward. When you bring it back to idle it runs rough because the shift interrupt switch (right name?) near the end of the shift cables needs to move into the right position on the fork like bracket. I noticed the plastic bushing seems to have some play in it or it just may need some adjustment. I could use some suggestions. Thanks

Re: Will not shift into reverse

I think I have found the problem. I pulled the outdrive. Found remnants of 2 black rubber pieces. They are in the shift rod area. When the water pump failed and it overheated it caused these pieces to melt. Anyone know what they are called, because they will have to be replaced? Also some kind of sealant was also inside (hard as a rock). It encased the shift rod and this kept it from going into reverse. I hope I can get it off. Anyone ever had this problem? Thanks for the help. This forum is great.
