1974 OMC 225 5.7 litre V8 and have very old gas, runs great above 1000 rpm's but dies at anything below that even when running at operating temp, havent had it in water yet after recieving it, but would rather use the 30 gallons of gas in the boat on the water than attempting to pump and recycle old gas. Other post indicated old gas might be causing some restricted fuel flow through the system and contributing to the dieing at low rpm. Will shifting briefly at this speed cause any severe damage?

Lets do the math...

30 gallons of very old gas at a replacement cost of $60.00

Trashing your outdrive, changing clogged fuel filters, risk being stranded in BFE when the engine conks out due to the varnish you are attempting to burn, etc, etc, etc....$$$$$$$$

Yeah, seems like a great idea to me

Right, I guess the cost of gas wasn't the issue, its the buying all the tanks and pumps I will need to get it all out and taking it to recycle, especially since it seems to run fine above 1000 rpm. I guess my next step will be to find the biggest gas cans I can find and prolly get a long hose and syphon it out a container at a time till its gone , replace the filter add some gas additive and fill her up with good fuel and see how she idles.

suck out the gas and fill up you whole neighborhoods lawnmowers.

the best method to start the prime, is to seal around your hose and blow into the vent.

Put a few gallons at a time into your neighbors cars and listen to them rave about their mileage.

David

wont hurt me at all or your local tech. we need the money :) :)
please dont shift that old drive that hard. it willpuke parts.
then you will have to find someone that will work on the old electric stuff. good luck but fix the engine before you fix the drive and the engine

if its the gas it will run slow as well as fast.more than likely ur idle jets are plugged up and need cleaning out.u can do that with some carb cleaner and a blow nozzle.hth. [put the gas in ur truck.]

If it smells like gas its probably ok,just reset your carb and go. If is smells like paint thinner it was bad long ago. You could drain it into cans, put new gas in the boat and run it then add the old gas a little at a time to use it up. Main thing is to get the engine running right first.

A bulliten at TC Electronics states that the biggest cause of failure to the ball gears and ultimately the stern drive is
a)running engine with the drive not all the way down and
b)shifting gears at RPM's above 600-650.

You gotta fix the idle problem, and I doubt it's just a matter of fresh gas.

I have a personal aquintance who owns a business that refurbishes auto fuel tanks. It costs nearly $3.00 a gallon to recycle gasoline. They only recycle gasoline when it's been contaminated. (Excessive rust particles, sugar, etc.) Otherwise, they just reccommend burning it up, adding fresh as the old is consumed.

BTW... There's a gas stabilizer I located (PRI-G)that according to the reviews I have read, also improves the combustion of old fuel.

Now that I've opened up the bees nest.... ;)

if you are worries about trying to get all the gas out just go to your local hardware store and buy you a drill operated pump! you only need to take about half the gass out, then fill the tank with premium and add some gas stabiliser to it, but if the gas is that old, you probabley need to get a carb kit and rebuild the carb! i would replace the fuel/water seperator as well! good luck!

Re: Will shifting into gear ~1000 rpm's hurt?

I am going to try running clean gas from container through engine and see if that is the problem. What has me stumped is that when idling around 1100 rpm's or so the idle mixture screws don't seem to be doing anything. Timing is right and channels in carb where all blown out and flow free. I thihnk at that high an idle there is another idle circuit? Am I correct that other than the idle screw on the linkage the only other adjustment is to be mad eis to the 2 idle mixture screws? In case I never specified this is a rochester quadrajet.
