This pic is the top of the flywheel on my 5hp Johnson I am working on. I just need to torque the nut on the flywheel and all is done. There are some holes on the top of the flywheel. I don't know if they are threaded or not, can't really feel any threads in the bottom of them...anyway, why can't I take a piece of wood and drill three holes in it..two for the two holes you see at 12o'clock and one for the hole at 6 o'clock and use those to insert some pins through the wood and drill a larger hold over the flywheel nut for the socket to go through. I could let the "handle" area of the wood press against under my arm and at the same time tighten the torque wrench.

Think this will fly? What are those holes for anyway? Many thanks.

get strap wrench, and put around flywheel itself. you are asking to crack the flywheel. http://www.toolfetch.com/p-02-bw14.shtml

The holes are to remove the flywheel. How did you get it off anyway? Never mind, to hold it use a strap wrench. You can make your own for pennies or free. All you need is a piece of wood and a strap of nylon webbing, or an old timing belt, or an old belt retired from holding your pants up, or whatever else you have laying around. Simply nail the belt to the wood and you are in business.

IT WORKED!!! I used the old hammer on the socket handle to remove it.

I like your home made strap wrench!! I will make me one.

Here is a pic of what worked. Now it's off to the barrel full of water for a test run!

Barrel test went very well. The electrical/impeller/gear lube seems to be fine now on this motor. Next is to pull the carb down and put in a new gasket kit. Then the complete tune up will be finished.

I usually put my socket on the nut and have somebody turn the key , and let the starter do all the work. :D

Sounds like a good way to shear the flywheel key to me, and possibly lose a few teeth in the process too.

God what's with all these contraptions, guys taking off flywheels with 2x4 and and engine jacks (referring to another post)

Air gun to remove nut, air chisel on the center of the crank and prybar under the flywheel, I've removed dozens this way, rusted on ones and all!

Your way is just fine. I do not have an airgun or an air chisel.

This cost me nothing, just a few screws from the parts drawer and a piece of 2X4 lying around on the floor and it worked just fine to take the wheel off and put it back on.

Ya i'm not saying it isn't usuable and genious in a jam, it was just the second post in a number of days where people are using wood to remove flywheels. I've used pullers , I have a proper one and it even sucks for pulling flywheels. I find air tools the best, the vibrate the flywheel off. I was literally referring to another post, no insult intended....
