AARRGGHH!! Wilma is really messing me up...

I got married last weekend and we are leaving on our Honeymoon later today.

I've had this trip booked for a YEAR! We're flying to Fort Lauderdale for a few days and then leave on a cruise to the Caribbean on Saturday...

I figured all the big hurricanes would be gone by now... then Wilma came.

Just in case, I bought insurance on the cruise but not the hotel or the flight.. no big deal there though, they aren't THAT expensive..

My question is - would you go? Even if we get out of port before Wilma gets there (which doesn't seem likely now), the water will be rough... the ship is HUGE but you have to imagine that it'll still rock some in those kinds of waters...

Should I go? I'm looking for other places to go right now... we want warm, beach, and she wants shopping.

AARRGGHH!!!

Thats a tough one jsfishn.

They've become so accurate with their predictions these days, I can't hardly believe the storm will miss Florida but you never know.

You'd be fine in the Carribean, but I would think the cruise might just be postponed a day or so. Have you tried checking with your travel agent?

I booked the cruise through Orbitz so I don't think I really have a person to talk to. I called the cruise line yesterday and they said that everything is still on schedule and they are going...

I guess I'm worried about the area being evacuated and us getting stuck with no place to go...

Is there anyway to postpone it for a couple weeks?

You for sure will get caught up in the evacution mess. Restaurants will close, etc. Power may be out.

How adventurous is your new bride?

Hey js...

If you bought the insurance and can get your money back, I say do it - and don't chance it. Its looking to be a nasty one, and the last thing I would want to do is jeopardize my new bride's safety.

Sean

It's going to be hard to postpone it with work schedules and all... She's really not that adventurous but she would be willing to go somewhere else - as long as it's warm.

She's not that big on flying, so Florida really worked out for us. It's only 2 or 2.5 hours on a plane.

I'm looking at California right now... maybe I can get a non-stop flight from here.

congratulations, js! I must of missed the announcement.

I'd go, if the cruise departs as scheduled doubt your insurance will pay, better check that.

On the other hand, ever been to California? San Francisco would be a great place to honeymoon I think. The drive up Hwy 1 to Monterey & Carmel is spectacular. UA has non-stop service from Dulles and Baltimore.

I'm on the phone now trying to switch from our Cruise out of Fort Lauderdale to a cruise to the Mexican Rivera out of Los Angeles.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

jtexas - Thanks - there hasn't been an announcement yet. I haven't had time to get online to let everyone know. :)

Even if we depart before the hurricane hits Florida, It'll probably be raining and rough most of the time where out there.

Uugghh..what a day! :)

Re: Wilma is really messing me up - should I go?

Ok, I think I've calmed down a little bit.

The cruise line, travel agent, or insurance isn't going to do anything for me yet.

The other cruise we were interested in since filled up, so that's out now too.

I cancled our hotel reservations and changed our flight to Saturday which is when the cruise is planned to leave.

I guess we'll just hang tight and see what happens. I figure if the air port gets closed, the cruise line is going to delay or cancle the cruise anyways - or vice versa.. then I should get some money back and we'll just go somewhere later.

We did get to stay in a really nice suite in the hotel where our reception was, so at least we got that.. :)

Anyways, thanks for the warm wishes, everyone - and RubberFrog - how are those chilis? I think I can get a hold of some Thai Peppers if you're interested.

The cruise lines won't do anything unsafe.
They Don't want to lose a 500 million dollar ship.
Fly to Florida pick up your cruis ship and go find some sun.
I have been on a few cruises during hurricane season thats when the best deals are.
If the Hurricane looks like it might hit one of ports of call they will cancel it and reroute to somewhere else.
We had 19ft seas on one cruise and I say my runabout rocks and rolls morewhen a ski boat drives by than those ships do.

I am taking my whole family on a cruise out of Ft lauderdale the week of halloween.

Go ahead live a little.
You won't regret it.

Re: Wilma is really messing me up - should I go?

Thanks, Bluewater. That really helped me out. What cruise line/ship are you going on?

I know those ships hardly move, but even a little bit of rocking would probably make it pretty uncomfortable for my new wife ... She has a good time on boats...but only when she takes her Dramamine. I just want to make sure she has as much fun as I would.

We'll keep an eye on the storm from here, and play it by ear.

Hopefully, it just dies out or heads out to sea...away from where we're going. :)

This might help.

George Carlin on New Orleans
"Been sitting here with my *** in a wad, wanting to speak out about the bull**** going on in New Orleans. For the people of New Orleans... First we would like to say, Sorry for your loss. With that said, Let's go through a few hurricane rules: (Unlike an earthquake, we know it's
coming)
#1. A mandatory evacuation means just that...Get the hell out.
Don't blame the Government after they tell you to go. If they hadn't said
anything, I can see the argument. They said get out... if you didn't,
it's your fault, not theirs. (We don't want to hear it, even if you don't
have a car, you can get out.)

#2. If there is an emergency, stock up on water and non-perishables.
If you didn't do this, it's not the Government's fault you're starving.

#2a. If you run out of food and water, find a store that has some.
(Remember, shoes, TV's, DVD's and CD's are not edible. Leave them alone.)

#2b. If the local store has been looted of food or water, leave your
neighbor's TV and stereo alone. (See #2a) They worked hard to
get their stuff. Just because they were smart enough to leave during a
mandatory evacuation, doesn't give you the right to take their
stuff...it's theirs, not yours.

#3. If someone comes in to help you, don't shoot at them and then
complain no one is helping you. I'm not getting shot to help
save some dumbass who didn't leave when told to do so.

#4. If you are in your house that is completely under water, your belongings
are probably too far gone for anyone to want them. If someone does want
them, let them have them and hopefully they'll die in the filth. Just leave!
(It's New Orleans, find a voodoo warrior and put a curse on them.)

#5. My tax money should not pay to rebuild a 2 million dollar house, a
sports stadium or a floating casino. Also, my tax money shouldn't go to
rebuild a city that is under sea level. You wouldn't build your house on
quicksand would you? You want to live below sea-level, do your country
some good and join the Navy.
#6. Regardless of what the Poverty ****s Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton
want you to believe, The US Government didn't create the Hurricane as a way
to eradicate the black people of New Orleans; (Neither did Russia as a way to
destroy America). The US Government didn't cause global warming that caused
the hurricane (We've been coming out of an ice age for over a million years).
#7. The government isn't responsible for giving you anything. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave, but you gotta work for what you want. McDonalds and Wal-Mart are always hiring, get a damn job and stop spooning off the people who are
actually working for a living. President Kennedy said it best..."Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

Thank you for allowing me to rant.

I wish to thank George for the guts to say just how
it is. It was a bad situation made worse by
residents who did not heed the warning.

AMEN

Js,
We are going on Princess this time.
But we have been on royal carribean and carnival
also. I don't think your wife will have any problems with the movement. My wife gets motion sickness real easy. When we fish in sanfransisco bay even on very calm days she has a hard time.
She has only been sea sick once on a cruiseship and that was coming out of the bahamas with those 19 foot seas.

I did get great video of the harbor pilot trying to get back on his boat in the rough stuff.
About every third or fouth wave the boat would stuff the bow.

Have fun and enjoy.

Re: Wilma is really messing me up - should I go?

Go. Keep a close eye on this, naturally. But understand that this storm is only H-force some 15miles from the center at present. This is not subject to vary much.
I would think it's doubtfull they'll cancel the cruise. But if they did, it would happen late tomorrow.
But if they did, you can still have a blast in Ft Lauderdale. You could also rent a car, and book-up the coast to Daytona Beach (a happenin town), or even further to Cape Canaveral, or even up to historic St Augustine (this is exact path Mrs 12Footer and I took on our honeymoon 14 years ago, and we had a great time. If it heads more northerly, just day-trip down south to the keys (albeit, in miserable traffic)...Just don't travel to the WEST coast.

Even if the center passes-over Ft Lauderdale, it will be a wimp after traversing the land mass of the state, becoming little more than a very windy rain event...Just find "something to do" that is inside...Or the surf will be up. :)
