I need to replace the winch and cable on my trailer. I see the options are cable or straps. Any opinions on which to choose? I'm partial to the cable.

TIA

Cable is nice, and strong, but when it gets a small fray on it watch your hands. You need to keep them lubed quite often or they start to rust. I use nylon webbing I just replace every couple although it will last longer

Webbing, like JGator said no grease and no slivers in the hands, plus it doesn't get bound up on the winch like cable does when it goes under itself when you wind it up.

One option is to get a new cable winch and try Amsteel Blue rope instead of steel cable.

Main Advantages:
Lighter
Extremely strong for the sizes
Easier to Handle
Extremely UV resistant
No wire frays, no gloves needed to handle versus steel cable
If/When it snaps, it simply drops to the ground versus a steel cable which carries high energy and will recoil possibly causing injury/death.

You can get some good prices/lengths on Ebay.

I've been using this for years and am very happy with it....even after several years, the color is still blue.

I have used both. I guess I prefer straps. More comfortable. I have seen wire snap, but never a strap.
