How do install the winch strap?
Do I loop the strap over the spool of the winch wheel or do I run the cross bolt through the loop in the strap? Either way the cross bolt ends up bent and ready to give out. These arent my pictures but this is what the bolt looks like.

the bolt goes thru the strap eyelet but you need a case hardened bolt to prevent it from bending.

Thanks for the help. Funny how the manufacturer doesnt provide the right bolt.

If it is an original bolt in the winch, then your overloading the winch.

Ayuh, .... that dosent make since!!!
if it bends that much, it could pull the sides in and rub the gears
maybe like was mentioned, it is over loaded , move up a size or two in wench size

Sounds like you're putting a lot of muscle on that winch, maybe review your launch/retrieval procedure before something gets broken! Good Luck!

>>it is over loaded <<

I'm certainly no expert on this subject, but when I replaced the original strap on my trailer's OEM Fulton winch, the strap bolt was bent just like the one in the picture. This trailer was made by the boat's manufacturer for my specific vessel. I can't imagine that they wouldn't use a winch capable of the load.

Ditto.....and or you must have a short winch strap. I think i rarely use more then about a third of my strap and that bolt rarely sees any tension at all. as prev suggested get one of those hardned [dark colored bolts] You WONT bent that sucker......

Does anyone know why they don't drill the bolt hole closer to the center so the bolt and strap can actually start at the bottom of the spool?

I always wondered about this.

I think it helps maintain the spools strength
