I cannot get my Windows 98SE to start. I went ahead and bought a new computer with Windows XP so that's how I'm posting now. I just want to recover some files from my old PC.
Here's what's happening on the WIndows 98 SE. When I tried to start it the response was VMM32.VXD is required to run Windows. You may need to re-install Windows. That's where I get into problems. I loaded my Windows Rescue floppy disk and inserted the CD disk for Windows 98 and Windows would not allow me to update. I also tried to extract the file VMM32.VXD using EXT.EXE but that didn't work either.
Any ideas out there?
Please keep it simple :) I'm not very CP literate.

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

The easiest way your going to get your files off of that computer is to take out the pysical hard drive, and put it in the new computer as a 2nd hard drive.

Before I go into instructions, are you comfortable doing this yourself?

if not, just take both computers to any local repair shop and ask them to install the drive for you. And make sure you tell them you want to get files off it so they know not to format it!

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

I don't know if I should help you out since you made fun of my grammar mistake before. :D :D

You will have to take both sides off the old computer. Remove the cables from the old hard drive and remove it from the computer. On the old drive, on the end where the cables plug in, you need to look for a jumper. Somewhere on the drive will be a legend, telling you where to put the jumper to make the drive a "slave".

On the new computer, remove the new drive and look at the jumper, make sure it is set to "master". Put that drive back in. Stick the old drive in there and plug in the cables.

The flat ribbon cable(IDE), will have a red stripe down one side. That stripe will go closest to the power cable. You should end up with both of the reds next to each other.(power and IDE) The newer drive should be plugged into the connector at the end of the IDE cable and the old drive should be in the middle.

Power on the computer and open up my computer. You should see your new drive in there. Just open it up and drag the files to the desktop and you are done.

Hope this helps you, if you need more specifics just post back and we will help you out. Even if you do make fun of me. :D :p

I see you "corrected" your grammar error in your quote. ;)
Thanks for the help. Might be a little too complicated for me. I'll have to re-read your instructions.

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

It really isn't very hard. The cables are probly keyed, so you can't put them wrong. The power definately will be. My instructions are kinda long winded. Take both of the sides off and tell me what you see. (if you are at home now) I will do my best to walk you through it. What brand of computer is the new one and what model?

Yes, I corrected my grammar. :D

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

A flat ribbon cable, leading to the drive. There will be more that one in there. One going to the cdrom, a narrow one going to the floppy, and one going to the hard drive. You should be able to tell the difference in the hard drive and cdrom.

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

You want the old drive labeled slave, not master. The newer one will be labeled master.

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

My bad. Old one is labled Master/Single On Slave Off I haven't labeled anything, just telling you what is printed on the old drive.

Where will I load this into the new CP? It looks like I don't have "slot" to hold it in place.

Now take the side off the new computer and make sure you understand where everything is. Then we will add the old drive to it. Make sure you understand how everything is in the new one, just in case adding the old drive to it messes something up. That way you can put it back together, just like it was and come back and tell me what happened.

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

Ok, we don't want that jumper on that setting, what other setting do you have? Is there a slave or maybe cable select, might be labeled CS. If you aren't going to leave the drive in there permanetely, you can just lay it in the bottom.

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

The "power"? plug-in on the new CP is labeled P5 with a not connected plug that looks like it jumps to the PF and is labled P4 I tried to hook up old drive to this and got a black screen of death. I guess I don't know what you mean by "jumper". I tried to hook up old drive using the flat cable.

Re: Windows 98SE Crash

The power connector will only go in one way. As long as it is getting power, it is ok. Do you have a digital camera? If so take a picture of the hard drive where the cables plug in and I will tell exactly where the jumpers would be.

The IDE cable will plug into the drive, with the red stripe closest to the power connector. It might be keyed and only go in one way.
This is a picture of the jumpers on a drive, may not look exactly the same, but similar. You should have a little black or blue jumper that goes across two of those pins. That is how you designate the master, slave, and cable select on a hard drive.
