I have my 57 Johnson 7.5 hp motor that I need to store for the winter. I have not put any fuel conditioner in the gas or sprayed any fogging oil in the carburetor or checked the gearcase oil (which I will do). I don't have any good way to run the motor to do any winterizing short of buying a 55 gallon drum to run it in. What are my options to winterize this engine? This engine is really sweet! Runs like it was brand new and is a real conversation starter when I run it around the marinas. It still has the original paint which of course is faded and scuffed up, but mechanically it's in fine shape. I put a new impellor in it last winter.

I personally like to spray the fogging oil into the carb throat till she dies, but if that is not an option, remove the spark plugs, spray the fogging oil into the cylinders, pull the cord a couple times to distribute the oil, re install plugs. If there is old gas/oil in the fuel lines and carb they could potentially gum up over the winter without stabilizer in the fuel, may need a cleaning in the spring. Or do it over the winter, only takes a half hour or so and is better than doing house chores! ;)

Then of course change the gearcase oil with new along with new crush washer on the drain and vent screws. Store vertically so that it self drains. Remove the prop, clean all the old fishing line off the prop shaft, re grease splines and re install prop. Grease fittings and you are goood to go until spring.

I love the 57s, one of my favourite years. I will have the whole 1957 lineup shortly ;) They are definately conversation starters. I love putting around the marina in an early 1920s outboard as well, you get plently of thumbs ups!

You can use a garbage can, a big bucket... There must be something to find? As getting stabilizer in the fuel is pretty key I find to stop the carb from gumming up., And then as Chris said, spray fogging oil in it till it dies. And change the LU oil.

I agree you should try and run it in a bucket/ barrel . When you run the last bit of fuel out of it you are getting the motor hot to burn off any moisture in the crankcase as well as coating all the internals -crank/bearings with the fogging oil. After the motor stops running pull the drain plug on the carb to completely drain. Pull the plugs and give that another shot of oil pull over a few times, drain and refill lower unit, grease all zerks. If used in saltwater i would spray oil anywhere you think it might start to corrode.

jmo, but i dont like to run them dry of fuel on purpose. get a garbage can, and dedicate it to your motor, you will use it again in the spring!
add the right amount of stabilizer to the tank, run the motor until you're sure the treated fuel is being run through the motor, then fog it through the carb, try to keep it from stalling for as long as you can.
then move on to the gearcase, drain and refill. ( if there is any water intrusion, it will stop any corrosion issues, and depending on your location, and if the motor is being stored in an unheated spot, it could save it from freezing and cracking)
