winterize + service ??

When I run outboards ... I didn't winterize, just run them once a month during winter.

Had an inboard for past 2 years ... 4.3L (carb) with raw seawater cooling.

Last 3 years I have had my annual service at end of the season & had engine winterized at same time.

This means all is set for layup (clean oil, filters etc.)
Tank is filled + stabilizer added.
Battery removed and trickle charged once a month.

Is this still a logical approach ...

Plan B would be to not service at this time & just winterize ? .........

Plan A does mean no waiting for service work when things suddenly get busy at Easter, and I am ready to roll.

Re: winterize + service ??

i think you answered your own question by stating that you would not have to wait for service in the spring, just connect the battery and go boating

by putting off service, like changing oil/filter, gear lube, pulling the drive and greasing/inspecting transom assy you are putting off finding a potentially bad problem until you want to use the boat

if you still don't want to service now at least change engine oil/filter and change the gear lube in the drive - you don't want old engine oil in there over winter (lots of crud in there that can harm components) and you don't want to find milky oil in the drive in the spring - could mean a cracked drive over the winter if there is water in there

if you do need major repair service why not get it done over the winter when you aren't using the boat?? some shops even lower their flat rate to drum up some winter work thus saving you money for gas and goodies in the spring :)
