lmao. well the boat is going to a mechanic in 2 weeks, there very busy right now. any last advice . the short history on the merc is last run in 04/05, been garaged, was running fine last use, where gonna love it- quotes from the seller). boat is a 1972 glastron v156 and merc is a thunderbolt ignition 65hp 650. the whole package looks like it came from the factory about 5 years ago not almost 30 yrs, one of the better condition boats i have seen for its age..the only issue is its been sitting with its fuel, gas/oil.i spoke to the mechanic on the phone last night and he said dont worry there is no water in it so to wait a couple of weeks to get it winterized from him. should i be concerned about this mechanic ?

Re: winterize ?

IF the outboard is stored straight up & down (not tilted up at an angle) then the water will be drained out. If it is tilted it could trap and hold water so I always store them in the down position.

Winterizing the outboard consists of fogging the cylinders, making sure the carbs are empty of fuel, and changing the lower unit oil.

Get the proper manual and do all the work yourself in under 30 minutes and save yourself a ton of money ;)

Actually, ...I have a question about fogging ---

The instructions on the spray can I have specify a certain amount of oil be sprayed into the carbs and also the cylinders.

How on earth is one supposed to measure that??? Is that one squirt or two?

My understanding is that you spray the oil into the carbs (or the air box?) until the motor basically 'chokes'.... does this mean until it actually stalls out?

And on the cylinder thing, after removing the plugs, how much do I spray in?

Hi Bob, hey I found that if you jack the trailer up in the front and tilt the motor all the way down and in that an additional 1/2 cup of water will run out. At least it does on my Mariner and my E-Tec. Might just be the difference in the way all of our trailers sit. Might be worth checking.
