I had my boat pulled this past weekend and my neighbor and I winterized it I think. Anyway I have a 454 merc 7.4 liter engiene it is an 1987. I drained the block then ran the engiene to warm it up once it was warm I began to pour antifreeze into risers and block. As I was pouring the antifreeze it ran right thru the engiene then out the outdrive it just ran right thru. Just looking for any help with what I did wrong with adding antifreeze.
Thanks in advance

Re: Winterizin question

That's normal on a raw water cooled engine. Until the engine is up to temperature and under load the thermostat will not stay open long enough for the antifreeze to get through the engine block. Only out through the exhause.
Best thing to do is drain the block. Air doesn't freeze and break things. If you want antifreeze in there, remove the thermostat and add antifreeze through the thermostat hole and put it back together. If you forget to drain something, the antifreeze will not mix on it's own, so be sure you drain everything first.

Re: Winterizin question

You drained the block then ran the motor up to temp, did you have a water supply hooked up to drive?, I suggest you open a drain on the block and be sure there is antifreeze and not water there, from your brief description on the process you used, I'm not confident that you are totally winterized, and if you ran motor without a cooling source I would suspect you now have a fried impeller. After you check the block, I suggest you remove the the 1.5 inch hose that comes up from outdrive to the t-stat housing and pour some antifreeze through it, this will back flush the power steering cooler and should see anti freeze draining from water intake on drive, then reconnect hose to t-stat housing, next remove big hose from engine water pump at the t-stat, and pour antifreeze in until it come out t-stat ( this could take between 2-3 gallons) reconnect hose, Then remove hose from the bottom of exhaust manifold and see if any water or antifreeze comes out if a/f your fine but if water then drain manifolds again, then reconnect hose to manifold, and remove same hose at t-stat and pour in a/f until is starts to come out exhaust. You do not need to run motor using this method and you can be sure all water has been drained.

Re: Winterizin question

One question to add to this post. Do you guys recomend chnaging the oil before winter storage or let it sit in there until the spring. A friend was asking me and since I've only really ever winterized outboards, I told him that I figured it would be better to fog it with the old oil in, just in case it gets contaminated by the fogging oil somewhat, and then leave it in until spring and change it then. What's the sense in changing it just to let it sit in the oil pan all winter? Am I totally off on this or is this a matter of opinion? Thanks.

mm

you want to change the oil and run then fog it flushes out anything in the oil that would rust or damage the motor.

tommays
