Winterizing 150 HP Merc

I have a 93 150 HP Merc Black Max O/B and am winterizing it for the first time. As winters can get cold (0 F) I would like to do it right.<br /><br />A buddy told me to drain the water jacket that cools the cylinders and this can be done by opening the drain plug, but he does not know were the plug is. I have taken the motor cover off and can not find an obvious drain plug. At the top of the 2 cylinders they each have a thermostatic control that allows water to exit but I can find nothing else. <br /><br />Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to properly drain the water out?

OutboardS drain all water out with the motor tilted down. No drain plug! Put stabilizer in the fuel, run motor on ears and fog the carbs(all three), shut the motor off pull all plugs and shoot a bit of foggin oil in each cylinder, replace plugs, change lower unit oil, I also like to pull the prop and check for fishing line around the shaft, and fully charge the batteries. Store motor in a fully down position and all water will run out on it's own. Your local marine will also do this for you for around 50-75 bones. Thank you very much for the advice. I have already done all the other items, the fogging, the storing upright, etc. Now I can rest easy when it gets really cold. Thanks again.

I'm wondering if it best to use stabilizer in the gas or run the gas tank & carbs dry for winter storage. I'm sure there's many views on this subject.

I always use the stabilizer in the gas and make sure I run it long enough to get it in the carbs, then I store it. MIne sets for about 4 to 5 months and I've never had problems. Either way you need to have the stabilizer in the gas so the gas doesn't go bad. In addition to the stabilizer in the gas and carbs, take a can of fogging oil and spray it into all the carbs until the engine stalls. Pull the plugs and give each cylinder a shot as well. Completely fill the remote oil tank and store in the down position to run all the water from the motor. Take a can of Corrosion Block (I got this from West Marine, I am sure there are other products out there) and liberally spray all electrical components and linkages. The corrosion block will protect electrical components from corrosion (hence the name?)and give good protection from weather. Grease all pivot points and cover. <br /><br />Next spring, fire the motor up and when is warms up, change out the old plugs to new ones..Go fishing.

Drain the carb float bowls while you have the engine cover off (running the engine out of fuel doesn't get all the fuel out). It takes 2 minutes.
