I am wintering my Vovlo Penta 5.0 gxi motors this season. I've done this is the past on my Mercruiser 5.0 carb'd motor however typlically paid mechanic as it was one motor and cheap....or i was lazy.......so newer boat this year with many more systems = $$$$$$.....my plan is simple and will follows Dons sticky for winterization just to ensure I don't missing anything .....as for the anti-freeze, i plan to drain the block and manifolds then back fill. So for anyone who has done it on these motors, how much anti-freeze I should buy to winterize one via backfilling? I have seen post mention anywhere from 2-5 gallons....I want to ensure I have enough, but not left with many unused bottles.....I'm in Delaware so im also not sure if I want -60 or -100 for piece of mind?

Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice....

There would be no reason to add antifreeze to a block. It simply isn't done or at least here in MN where our winter temps are daily the coldest in the country. The air inside of the block doesn't freeze. If you are unsure or uncapable of draining the block correctly, either learn now while it is still warm or sub it out to someone.

I wouldn't buy any, you have to drain the system in order to back fill it, at that point there is nothing in there to freeze and break anything. So why the antifreeze? Air don't freeze.

If you do "Miss" something when draining, you can't just pour antifreeze into something that is still full of water. So it really isn't doing anything but giving you a false sense of security. Whatever you miss draining will freeze and break anyway.

But if you are set on using antifreeze, get a couple of gallons. If that isn't enough, get more later. It's drained, so it won't freeze.
