Hello. I am planning to winterize my Chrysler 1979 70 h.p. o/b engine . I have never done it myself, but one of the steps involve changing the oil in the gearcase. What kind of oil do I use and the specifications ? Can I change the oil while the boat is in the water or do I have to take it out? How do I let the oil drain out and where do I put the oil? Can I get this oil at Canadian Tire ?
Thank you for your help.

Hi, This winter I'm just going to take the LU off and put it downstairs. On my 55, it's 4 bolts and a linkage connector. No need to remove prop. As for gear oil, I use Pennzoil gear lube.

Irene, on the very bottom of the round part of the gearcase (in front of where the prop is), there is a plug about the size of a dime with a slot in it for a flathead screwdriver. Directly
above it (about 10 inches or so, and just below the first fin) is an identical plug. These are the drain and vent plugs. With the boat out of the water unscrew the bottom plug then the top
plug and drain into whatever container you have placed under the bottom fin to catch the oil.
Once you have drained the oil completley you can fill the gearcase with a good "marine grade" gearcase oil, found at wal-mart or a marine dealer. You can buy a pump to do this fairly cheap as it is rather messy without one (it just fits right in the bottle and has a fitting that screws into the bottom hole.) fill the case until you see oil trickle out the top of the top plug hole. Once you see this, install the top plug back in and tighten it up, remove whatever you're using to fill the case with, (some will leak out that's ok it leaves room for expansion) Put the plug in and you're ready to rock. For other winterization info check the other posts there's lots to learn from some really good people. :D :D Hope this helps.

Might want to use disposable gloves when draining lower unit. Cant think of a worse smell than that oil. Before doing the oil change you should put motor in water and run gas out by disconnecting gas line. While gas is running out spray fogging oil into carburator until motor kills from gas starvation. Remove plugs and spray a bunch of fogging oil in each of the cyliners. put plugs back on with wires disconnected and hit starter a couple of times to circulate oil in motor. This will lube engine for the winter. Fogging oil is sold at most marine dealers and at most auto stores.

Just make sure you only remove plugs with straight slots.... do not remove phillips head.
make sure your old drain seal washers are cleaned off both drain plug and mating surface...change these washers with gear lube.
Be sure to stabilize fuel and run fogging oil through carbs.
Remove prop and grease shaft and all grease fitting on engine as well.
