This is my first time winterizing an outboard. I have been getting a lot of conflicting info. and advice. it is a 150 hpdi yamaha. Can the motor be run on land with earmuffs? I tried it for only a few seconds but the "pisser" didn't seem to have anything coming out, (didn't want to do any damage). I learned on this site that the engine can't be run with just the flush loop hooked to a hose. (thanx Rodbolt) Should this engine be fogged out or should the oil be sprayed directly into the plug holes? A guy at one boating store parts counter said you cant fog a fuel injected motor because it has no carb- I did not believe that- do you remove the top piece of the intake ? don't these motors have the same internal preservation needs? Vapor canister?

Hello
we decarb and fog the HPDI by removing the black air box 5 or 6 #3 phillips screws. there is a drain line and the oil tank vent line but they are easy to deal with. it takes a couple seconds to get a good tattle tale. on the 150 remove the prop so you can shift into gear safely. those motors sound blowed up on the old flush muffs. it works best if you can shift into gear. the HPDI idles on 4 cylinders when in nuetral. shift into gear and it will smooth out some. I usually say add fuel stabilizer but yamaha reccommends actually draing the Vapor seperator. that is the aluminium tank on the port side forward.grease it change gear oil dont try to stall it with fogging oil just spray 15 or 20 seconds in each throttle bore. I just made a four stroke fogging tool
works like a champ and no airbox removal :) .so good luck and keep posting
your on the right track the motor does not care about temp. you are trying to presrve it during long term storage

Rodbolt-thanx a lot. Is there a particular type of muffs you would reccomend? I bought the tempo-pro model flusher muffs but they do not form a tight seal around the intake screens. It seems like most of the water leaks out before the engine can suck it up. Should the "pisser" be squirting out water at this point? I am afraid that I will not be adequately cooling the motor in order to follow the other procedures you described. Should I hook up both the muffs and the flushing hose in order to get enough water pressure? I am mechanical, Just not familiar w/

Did you say you couldn't run the 150 on the hose fitting on the side of the motor. How long can you run these motors on that without doing any harm.
Thanks Mike

Hello, from what I can gather, you should not do it using just the flush out hose fitting. I asked a few different mechanics and "parts counter guys" and they seem to agree. (but of course, these are the guys who want you to pay them to do it, so of course they will say that you can't do it yourself). Last time, I had them do it because it was still under warranty and I wasn't going to mess w/it. I had a problem finding "earmuffs" that would fit the over the cooling intake snugly. The water would just spray out where there should have been a tight seal. I have since bought a diff. set of muffs that is smaller and doesn't even look like "enough" , yet looks like it will just right. I have another two months of fishing to go, so I can't say I'll be doing it just yet. There is also a certain order that you have to follow in "fogging out " or I'm told it will foul up the o2 sensor? I paid them, it's too expensive a thing to screw up on. I have not been able to find the right shop manual either. may the force be with you

You can't run the engine with the original hose fitting because the waterpump get no water if you use it. It's only for flushing when the engine is stopped. You must use earmuffs.
