Hi. I'm sure this has been asked before, but this weekend i'm going to winterize my boat. When i warm up the engine, should I first run water through the stern drive to open up the thermostat? Should i just let the engine get to operating temp without water to open the thermostat? Also, how much antifreeze should I run through the engine. I know thier basic questions, but i'm still learning. Thank you for any advice in advance.

I agree with the dude above.

but that doesnt help you if your going to ignore it. Never run the motor without the muffs on and the hose fully open. also have the drive all the way down. make certain its hot enough for the thermostat to be fully open.

I purchased a kit from a marine store, it uses 5 gallons of anti-freeze. So 5 gallons worked for me. I used this method for ~4 years in the PNW and never had a cracked block.

Moved this to the Mercruiser I/O section. I hope that's what you have. Info and more info will help a lot.
