Winterizing My Broke Merc 150

My 1987 Merc. V-150 has a chewed up piston. I will not be able to rebuild it until next spring. How do I winterize this engine? Will turning the engine with the starter motor create enough vacuum to suck the fogging oil in and cote the bearings, crank, cylinder walls, and rings? If so how long do I want to crank? Any advice is appertained.

A lot of the guys know a lot more about this than I - Having said that if it were mine I would pull all the plugs and spray in each cyl with your favorite stuff (I would use Marvel Mystery Oil) and turn it over by hand. Take the cover off the carbs and do likewise but will probably need something like WD40.<br /><br />I would not use the starter as you may do a lot more damage. If you do it by hand you should be easily able to detect any binding and stop.

I would do what SoLittle said , but if it were me, I would remove the Carbs AFTER you do the other recommendations from him. The reason being, you will have old fuel sitting in the Carbs until you get it rebuilt and that could cause you problems later on after the rebuild. In the meanwhile, while you are waiting to repair your Motor, you could rebuild them over the winter and have that Part out of the way. Also Drain the Lower unit before you put it up, just in case there's any water in there! And yes, what he said will suffice to coat the bearing and other parts! Good Luck with the Rebuild!

Thanks Rick<br /><br />A carb rebuild is the reason the engine is in the shape it’s in. I guess I didn’t do a good enough job when I rebuilt them. Near as I can figure one of the high-speed jets got partly clogged and ran lean. Chewed up a piston real good.<br /><br />Good idea about pulling the carbs I’ll do that and the lower unit too. While it’s down this winters I plan to do the cheep stuff, water pump impeller, t’stats, pop offs. Come tax time I’ll do the rebuild.<br /><br />Does any body else have suggestions on things I should do while I have it torn down?
