I am a first time boat owner and I have a few questions concerning products used to winterize a 2005 volvo 5.0 GXI-E and penta sterndrive unit SXM.

I'm sure volvo/penta does not manufacture their own oils and filters and I would like to aviod paying high prices at the local marina when purchasing products. Are there highly recommended products on the market that I could use, or maybe it is very important to the maintenance and performance that I use the volvo/penta brand products.

Volvo/penta is recommending using their 10W 40 synthetic motor oil. Is there a highly recommended motor oil that I can use other than volvo/penta 10W 40 synthetic oil?

The oil filter currently being used is a quicksilver number 35-866340Q03 is there a cross reference number to another brand of oil filter that can be used? (wix - fram)

The fuel/water separator filter by Sierra currently being used no longer has a readable part number. What part number should I purchase to replace the filter?

My last question for today is about the penta SXM sterndrive, volvo/penta recommends using their 75W 90 synthetic gear oil, can I use another highly recommended brand of gear oil or do I need to purchase the volvo/penta products?

Thanks to all who help.

Just like your car or truck, if you would rather use something else from what the manufacturer recommends, well, it's yours ....... Do what ever you want with it,

There isn't much of a price difference between good quality products. If it's cheaper - it's cheaper for a reason! Go with what the manufacturers recommend - peace of mind is worth more than the few bucks saved.

You should be able to cross reference the oil filter here on iboats with a Sierra model - our dealer recommended it as a replacement and was even able to upsize to a longer filter.

I would think that if you use your serial number on the engine you could look up the correct fuel filter on a website? i was with my merc (until the site was shutdown...)

10w40 is 10w40... just be lucky they recommend a type that is readily avaliable in the after market (valv/mobil/etc make plenty of options)
