I have a 87 omc 5.7(GM 350). I took the boat to a marine last year and had it winterized and when the boating season came around I hooked it up on muffs and I noticed my oil cooler was cracked and water was spraying everywhere. I plan on winterizing it myself this year. My question is what should I do so it does not happen again.

when I removed the oil cooler (it was a pain in the ***!!!) I noticed the previous owner must of had the same problem because they had jb weld all over it. Is there anything else I should know or do so I do not mess nothing up that I can not fix!!!

P.S.
I read the winterize post and adult only I Am just see if anyone else had this problem?

THANKS

Probably a little helpful to know where you are (answers the "how cold does it get there" question), and how you store the boat (inside, outside, wrapped, etc.).

I keep mine in an insulated garage in TN ... winterizing is a fairly simple process compared to someone in North Wisconsin, but still more work than someone Florida would bother with.

Follow the small hose from the thermostat housing back and you'll find it connects to the p/s oil cooler, you take that hose off the t-stat housing and lay it down low in the bilge to drain, the p/s cooler if mounted correctly should be tilted towards the bilge for residual water to drain. Typically you shouldn't need to do anything more.

I live in PA. It does get cold here but nothin below 20 degrees. I do store it outside and I have it shrinked wrapped.

a70eliminator - Do you think it would be ok to leave it unhooked for the winter?

I did what 70eliminator said, then had second thoughts and got the drain plug out to make sure and everything was drained. I left my the hose off the thermostat housing and kept the petcock plugs out also for the winter. I also used my air compressor to make sure there was no rust plugging the drains for the block and I also kept the rubber plugs out of the exhaust maniflolds. Just remember to put it all back together in the spring. By the way I live in Michigan and our winters get pretty cold usually.

Shrink wrap does not keep it warmer in the boat, just keeps the rain and snow out. Yes, you can leave it unhooked, it won't hurt anything, but why? It's just something else to forget to install in the spring, and if you do forget, the engine overheats and your bilge fills with water until you notice it..
