Winterizing - Should I drain the antifreeze??

Winterizing question (for Michigan). 1989 OMC Cobra 5.7L/350.

I ran the engine to operating temp on muffs. Changed the oil, oil/fuel filters then ran 5 gallons of antifreeze (4, -60F and 1 -100F). As I noticed the antifreeze coming out solid, and at this point gone, I realized I didnt drain the block first. So I pucked up 4 more gallons. Instead of running it throught he running engine, I then drained the block, manifolds, cooler, cranked the engine a few rotations. I removed the waterpump hose from the thermostat and poured antifreeze directly into the pump until it started to come out of the thermostat housing. I put the hose back on, replugged everything and cranked the engine a few more times. Then I checked the block, and solid antifreeze came out.

My questions are; 1) Is this method good enough.

2) should I drain the antifreeze as well, or leave it in the block for corrosion protection. I guess I'm still concerned about freeze cracking if I leave it in. Although I have effectively -70F protection.

-David

Sounds like you have it done.Twice actually!!I like the idea of leaving antifreeze in the block.Thats what I have always done.I bought a kit made by Camco which lets you introduce antifreeze through the outdrive once the motor is warmed up and thermostat opened. No need to drain anything or remove any hoses.I did not notice you making any reference to "fogging" The motor which needs to be done.Have you done this ?????Charlie

I just change the oils, drain the block and power steering cooler and let it go at that. Once the water's out of the block there's nothing there to freeze. What little water that might be left in the bottom of block can't hurt anything.

Wow thats exactly what did.. Talk about overkill..
I would rather be safe than sorry. Different people do different things, some just drain it and some put antifreeze in it.

Different strokes different folks...

Have a great winter!

I like to be safe than sorry too. Plus, last spring, I had to replace one engine because of a freeze crack. Apparently, didnt get enough antifreeze throught the block and assumed I was safe. I usually leave the antifreeze in for corrosion protection, so I didnt check it (lesson learned!)

I guess I have a little more to worry about that you guys down there in NC.. it get pretty wicked cold here in Michigan come late Jan, Feb. We routinely get sub zero consecutive days.

Also, I did fog out the engines. Thanks.

The only thing you did that I would do differently is replacing the fuel filter now. I would have waited till spring. Now the new filter will sit all winter with fuel and have a chance to gum up.

Hey Tallman8251 - you have any pics of your Regal? I have found that they are rather rare and I want to get some ideas about restoring the interior. Email me at justmrwill@hotmail.com if you can. Thanks

BTW...I drained and re-filled my block with anti-freeze tooll..figured..better safe than sorry.

How do you get anti freeze into the engine once you have acheived operating temperature. I have a 1998 4.3L alpha one.
Thanks
Chuck
