OK, i wasn't really trying to **** EZ off. i may even go buy another OB in his honor today. :)

and i realize this is an I/O Q but assume follks here know the answer. what else besides draining block and manifold is needed? is there a drain on the outdrive (Alpha 1) somewhere? any specific chants and incantations required? does it involve sacrificing small animals to the dark gods of Mercruiser?

gracias!

Getting EZ all worked up about IO's is one of my favorite online hobbies.

Though I must say, I think he is warming up to them.:D

First read my signature, then...

Make sure all the water is out of your hoses too, power steering was a little tricky on mine, yada, yada. Introducing AF is an option. Swing over to the IO section and you'll read for days on AF vs. no AF. My take is that AF prevents corrosion (what little there is) NOT for prevention of freezing. Fogging, again optional, lots of reading on that one too. Change your oil and filter, Sta-Bil your fuel (lots of reading on full vs. empty tank), change fuel filter. (None of this is necessarily in order)

My outdrive is sitting in my basement at the moment. You'll hear the pros talk about taking their outdrive off at the end of the year and doing the same. This is a good opportunity for you to drain/fill the OD lube and check for water finding it's way in. Good time to check for alignment too. Also a good time to swap out impeller or water pump (if it's due) as she is already off, eh!

Have fun buddy!:D

Hey, don't worry about EZ and the other OB guys getting all bent out of shape. Their just bored and sad as all they get to do at the end of the year is make sure their unit is lowered. Sheesh, what fun is that! Winterizing an engine should at least be a full day battle with wads of cash flowing out of your wallet!

:D

Wait a minute, aren't you in a desert somewhere? Does it get cold enough for ya?

Gentlemen, I realize I am but a humble OB owner but may I suggest:
Fill your gas tank to the rim and add Stabil or equal. My logic is an empty gas tank has more room for condensation at low and freezing temperatures. This would allow moisture into the tank. A full tank will not have this condensation problem. Even though I added a water seperator to my fuel lines, I always fill up my boat AFTER I pull it out of the water on my way home. With Stabil (or equal) the gas will last 6-8 months with not issues.

Could help prevent rust/corrosion too if the tank is metal.

Yeah I know EZ. I just popped in for a good laugh. You know these guys will need all the help they can get. They have about a dozen or more steps they have to do to winterize than us sane folks. I just can't kick a man when he is down so I figured a little tip couldn't hurt.;)

it hits the high 20s at night in Jan so yeah, freeze protection is an issue. the rest of it, not so much of an issue, as daytimes in Jan still get into mid 60s so i can essentially boat all year. this will hopefully only be an issue this winter, as by next one, it should be in sunny Sonora where it rarely gets into even the 40s. as you may have noted from my other recent post on yesterday's fishing down there, they are still catching the warm water pelagics like dodos, sails and marlin.

BTW, thanks everyone for the input! :)

Here it is straight from the pros. (Above link, not my ramblings)

I'll be taking off my outdrive and like Jasoutside, it'll go in the basement. I'll drain the block too.

Good luck to all and no cracked blocks! This is the one and only time of year I would trade my wonderful Iron Duke for a stinky oil burner.:D It would save me the painful 1/2 hour of winterizing.

My outboard brothers, if you read the stinky comment I hope I didn't hurt your feelings. You're not supposed to be in here anyway, this is an I/O thread.:p

If you live in a nice warm climate and don't have to winterize, I hope you have a good additional boating season. Have fun in the sun blah, blah, have a beer for me blah blah, catch many fish blah blah, bikinis blah blah blah.....

Bwana, you may have an IB and I have a OB, but the Offshore makes us brothers to da bone.;)

Like I said once before, as long as its NOT a Force, it would work for me.

Besides, at least none of you IB guys take my teasing seriously, actually no-one takes me seriously.

What I would love to do with my I/O, hang twin evinrude e-tec's on the back.
But I had to drain the manifold, elbow, and inter cooler so I can have another season next year with the old I/O.
What did I find when I pulled the I/O oil in the bellows, well got that fixed and all I need to do is bolt in on the boat.

Why do you guys put your I/O in the basement?
What do you do with the hole in your boat?

Well, in my case I have nothing to mount my OD to at the moment  so the basement works great for storage.

I think that the pros and guys in the know do it for a couple of reasons...

1. Prevent thievery

2. Minimize exposure to the elements that old man winter provides

3. Has to come off to check alignment anyway

4. Has to come off to perform any relevant maintenance stuff anyway (pump, bellows, etc.)

5. Maybe others, I'm a nub

I am seeing guys do all sorts of things to cover the OD hole - plastic bag, plexi glass, custom made covers, aftermarket covers, large cats stuffed in there (though not very weather proof)...

Cheers!

Brothers from a different mother, Fshngho!

Why do I put the outdrive in the basement? Jasoutside told me to, he is a marine tech after all. We call him Dr. Mercruiser in these parts, Dr. M.J. Mercruiser.

Well that is what Vermonter's do at about 20 degrees when we feel a bit chilled......... 21 degrees is much warmer!!!

We have seen periods where the highest temperature reaches 5 above zero once in 30 days.........

Just because we shovel our sunshine ......... that is no reason to make fun of us!:p

Re: winterizing the murkcruiser

replace "hurricane" with "blizzard" and try that last sentence again....;)

1. Prevent thievery

HAHAHAHAHA ROFL visions of thieves out smashing their fingers in the cold trying to remove that oh-so-valuable outdrive. i Imagine KellyC would have liked to have a few of those thieves help remove his.......

REASONS NOT TO WINTERIZE:

check out the latest reports from Sonora from last 2 days:

from Fernando (catch 22)
LOTS and LOTS of marlin today only a few hundred yards from shore. We went out at 8 am, started jigging for yellowtail only to watch a panga hook up a marlin right next to us...a few minutes later another panga gets a marlin. We were still trying for yellowtail and 15 minutes later or so yet another panga hooks up a double!! that made it for us...we pulled the jigs out and started trolling...in about 15 minutes we had our first triple strike...no hook up...a few more minutes and we get another marlin in the spread and we finally hook up on a pakula phantom lumo. 20 minute fight for my broter Jorge and he released his first marlin.

from Bryan's dad
Well, the weather is fantastic...slightly cool in the morning and warm enough to enjoy the beach during the days. However, the fishing is even better:
Monday....4 hours...one sailfish and one marlin released
Tuesday** 6 hours** two marlin released
Wednesday...the yellowtail were boiling all over San Antonio point. We put five in the box, followed by a dozen or more nice sierra up to 7 pounds, and one bonita for diversity!* By 11 we were bored and decided to look for marlin and more. Capt. Arturo hooked the first marlin one mile off of San Antonio, and then we released four more during the next 5 hours...a record for Team Margarita! All were stripers from 125-175 pounds, and all were caught and released within 7 miles of Doble. One large black marlin smashed through our spread but failed to hook up.
Thursday...we decided to look for dorado and tuna. The tuna were a "no show"* but we did find dorado in the neighborhood of 22 miles and 190 degrees out from Doble. They were medium sized, but we landed 9 and kept 6* bulls.

more from Fernando
Went out for a test run on Rubina today by myself looking for an afternoon yellow tail bite. Left te marina at 2 pm ad by 2:15 I spotted a flock of birds...sent 2 rapalas down and when I got to the birds I saw 3 marlin casing bait under them. I pulled out te rapalas right away and put 4 pakulas out...15 minutes later I was hookd up the a striped marlin, probably a mile offshore. It was a lot of fun fighting the marlin while trying to take pictures at the same time...I was lucky not to loose him since e went under the boat a couple of times while I had the fishing pole in one hand and the camera on the other hand.

I used a bill rope just to try and show how close I was to shore...as you can see in the pictures I was trolling really close in.

After releasing the marlin I set the lines out again and hooked up another marlin that I ended up loosing after a short fight...Next time I won't grab the camera!!

No yellowtail, but I did see at least 10 billfish, everytime the birds would start working there was marlin under them....I fished for 2 and a half hours and never went past 2 miles.

AAAAARGH! i'm jonesing so bad my skin is crawling......

"Ahhhhh...If only the boy was here..If only the boy was here.." The old man thought to himself as he banged his shriveled up hand against the boat..

"Fine, go ahead ahead and clamp shut you worthless old hand" he said..

Once again the monster fish he had on his line made a sudden burst, towing the old man yet further away from the village, and the little boy...
