Winterizing through solenoid?

I have a 93 Johnson 90 hp two stroke. I bought a can of tune up and a can of fogging oil. Both cans suggest you use the valve at the solenoid. Do I just screw on the hose at that valve above the solenoid and fire up the motor and press the button on the can and it does it's stuff?? Do I need to unhook the gas or does it just use both the gas and the tune-up stuff together? Thanks

you have to have it running on muffs, if you use that method i suggest you add seafoam to your fuel for the last tank, so it is in the carbs, to keep them from gumming up.

Re: Winterizing through solenoid?

Thanks for the reply Tashasdaddy. I'm going to be adding fuel stabilizer to a full tank before I store it. Can I add the sea foam as well or is it overkill? So was I right about just screwing the can of tune-up onto that valve over the solenoid and running the motor with gas and muffs till the can emptys? Thanks

yes you can add seafoam also. to be honest, i have never in my life winterized a motor. living in Florida, we just store the motor in the running postion, so the power head drains. we use our boats year round.

Re: Winterizing through solenoid?

I just winterized my Johnson. I run fuel stabilizer during the last few trips to make sure it is in the carbs. You could also let it run on the muffs for about ten minutes to allow the stabilizer to reach the carbs. If you already have stabilizer in it the seafoam is not necessary.

The solenoid you are referring to is actually the electric fuel primer. When you press your key in it will inject fuel straight to the carbs to assist with starting. The valve on the electric primer is used for the engine tuner and the fogging oil. DO NOT use the engine tuner for storage purposes it needs to be burned off within 24 hours of its use, there is some nasty solvents in it that could cause damage to gaskets and such if left in too long. The fogging oil just screws onto that valve. Make sure the red lever on the valve is in the run position when you fog the motor and yes you leave the fuel line connected when fogging the motor.

The directions for this procedure should be on the can of the fogging oil. You must first warm the motor up and then according to my can, inject a 2 second blast of the fogging oil for each cylinder you have waiting two seconds in between each blast, Then inject a final blast for 20 seconds or until the motor stalls. When you do this the motor will smoke like crazy and sound like it is stalling because of all the oil going into the motor. Some people will also remove the spark plugs after this procedure and inject some of the fogging oil straight into the spark plug holes, then turn the motor over by hand a few times just for good measure.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks Salmonseeker. That is exactly the step by step help I was looking for. I was planning on using the tune-up before my next outing and then i'll do the fogging around november after targeting some wallys. Thanks again.
