I have succesfully tried using leadcore wire with alewives(saw bellies) at 90 feet while drifting.
Does anybody have experience wire lining while trolling with either hardware or live bait?

Re: wire lining lake trout.

Rolmops, during the spring/summer months I troll with lead core line. I like to troll for lake trout and kokanee salmon and since I don't have a downrigger, leadcore works for me to reach the depth that the fish are at. I haven't trolled with live bait, just hardware. The color coded line makes it easy for me to determine how deep I am fishing. I've figured that for each color out, I'm trolling about 5 feet deep (5 colors=25 feet), etc. I don't know if I've helped any. Have a good day.

Have you considered using a downrigger(s) rolmops? After the spring/early summer top water column fishing that Lakers offer they go down deep and hug bottom(obviously).. for line and depth control/precision presentation etc., downriggers are the way to go IMHO.

What you'll pay for good wire line rigs you can get good manual d-rigger set-up(s) and be ahead of the game w/o all the headache.

just my $.02

Re: wire lining lake trout.

Thank you for your comments.
The reason why I want to try wire lining for lake trout, has to do with the way they take the bait.
Unlike most other fish, lake trout will take the bait sideways in their mouth, swim away from the group and only then will swallow the bait head first. They will immediately drop the bait when resistance is felt, which makes sinkers or for that matter down riggers a liability.
Lead core works great when still fishing.
My next experiment would include bottom bouncing with a very light weigth and an alewife in tow. This would involve trolling.therefor my interest in wireline.
As far as cost is concerned, there is no problem because I would just use my salt water striper wireline setup-a 7 foot sabre with an senator 113HSP with 600 feet of wire on it.

I'll agree that they're slashers, approach and strike from the side.. but, I'm no expert on Lakers' behavior patterns while feeding.. the hook placement tells a story though. I've had several instances of small lakers in the 7-10lb. range have what I believe to be the most positve 'hook-up' possible being a single 3/0 hook through the eye socket. And having to unhook them is a chore because that size range of L.Trout is a near perfect fit for the gap of that hook to fit 'perfectly' in and out in just one position in the far side of the mouth agianst the jaw hinge.

From my experience trolling on L. Michigan I can't say I've ever once 'targeted' Lakers. Actually, quite the opposite is true for me but, thats another story. Its pretty common knowledge around the Sheboygan Harbor (where I fish out of)when the fish move out of the top water column that you "drop your nuts to the floor and bounce 'em off their heads to wake 'em up." As for baits, dodger/fly combos and J-Plugs (similar 'plugs' too) spoons also but, the flies and J-Plugs are more popular. Generally speeds are on the slower side rarely ever above 2.0 GPS and closer to @ 1.5-. Again, off of riggers(8-10lb nuts) and 20lb mono.

I'm just talkin' here rolmops.. I've never fished the waters where you are so I've got no clue on the specifics of the water there.. not tryin' to talk you out of it and should probably just keep my yapper shut.

Just throwing words around I guess :)

Before we had the electric down riggers we used them for koakanee (sp) and german browns in deep lakes. Worms and lures (usually wedding rings with some type of flasher set up)
