Wire Size

I have a 78 mercury outboard, SN 5446855 The wiring from the Harness all through the motor crumbled into dust pretty much. To rewire the motor what size wire is used or is it a special type wire I need? Also... what could have caused the wiring to do that?<br />I have a repair manual for the motor. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks<br />Connor

Welcome to Iboats..<br /><br />I had a similar prob with a few trigger wires and if they are ordinary low tension type wires, you can use same amp auto/marine wire. Try to get the same colours if possible, to keep consistant with the diagram.<br />There are also special tinned type wires that are better for corrosion resistance.<br />The Sparkies on here would be able to explain the Galvanic corrosion better than me, but it is a common occurance on Boats/Outboards having a combination of Battery,salt water and different matals living together.
