Whilst poking around to solve some other issues (thanks to those who helped here) I found a wire that goes nowhere. There are 2 brown wires (one on each pair of cylinders). The one on the right (looking from behind the motor) is connected at both ends and enters the engine circled in blue. (see first pic)
The other (left) is just floating (circled in red). The equivalent spot on the left has a White/Black wire (also circled with blue in the second pic).

I suspect it has something to do with the temperature sender but why would one end of the brown wire go nowhere?

Any ideas?

You might tell us the year of the motor. The left side brown wire looks to be an aftermarket temp sender. The right side looks to be a temp switch which likely is supposed to sound an overheat alarm. The white/black wire may be the quickstart sender, although that kinda depends on the year of the motor.

Sorry, it's a 2000. Both brown wires look pretty much identical and, as can been seen, both have that rubber connector looking gizmo with the two spring clips.

What is the quickstart you refer to?

When it was new it would have had a 2 wire temp switch in the port side.
1 wire for the tan and 1 wire for the white/black.

Someone has cut them off and fitted a temp sensor in place of the original 2 wire temp switch then run a new brown wire up to a temp gauge on the dash.
A dumb idea as now you have no warning horn on the port side and it would appear no quickstart either.

I'd put it back to original then find a new place for the temp sensor to go, not 100% sure but it looks like it would go into the bolt hole just to the right of it's present location.

Take your pictures to an OMC dealer to order parts and get it sorted out properly.

No No No......Those are the OEM senders and the brown wire has been pulled out of the port side sender. The white/blk wire is for the Quickstart and the brown wire goes in with it . Most likely the cowl latch caught and pulled it out when cowl was installed/removed roughly. It does have a aftermarket temp sender for a gauge but no wires cut/spliced. The part is 0586140 and about $100

Yes Yes Yes....... I see it now Faztbullet, just a matter of fitting a new sensor & plugging in the wires.

I'm still confused.

First, what is the Quickstart?

Second, you say the wire goes in with the black/white wire. Does this mean they, somehow, connect together.

I guess I'm missing what exactly each wire does. Do you suppose I'm missing the 0586140 part you mention?

Cheers

The port temp sensor comes with 2 wires, a tan one, and a white/black one. There are actually two switches inside that port sensor.
The tan wire connects to the harness exactly where you are seeing it, and it switches to ground when the engine overheats.
The white/black wire switches to ground when the engine comes up to temp (105 I think) to signal the pack that the engine is warm.
The port sensor is also much more expensive than the stbd. Yours probably cannot be fixed.

QuickStart is a feature built into the pack AND the timerbase (both work together) to "advance" the timing when first starting the engine. It goes active
every time the key is turned to the start position. If the engine is cold, determined by the sensor attached to the white/black wire, QS remain active until the engine warms up.
If the engine is already warm, again determined by the sensor attached to the white/black wire, QS drops out after about ten seconds.
QS operation is observed by the engine starting, running at a fast idle, and then sometime later, dropping down automatically to normal idle. You can hear it.

Excellent explanation, thanks. I'll take a look the next chance I get. It's getting cool here already so I'll report back when I can.

Just found the part in question [ http://www.iboats.com/SWITCH-AY-TEMP/dm/cart_id.164183116--session_id.464522174--view_id.1495409 ] and see the 2 wires so I suspect you're right, there's no fixing it.

Am I right in thinking the only issue I have now is not getting a warning if the port side overheats? I'm not sure if the QS is working but I do know if fires up just fine when cold
