Wireless Connection Problem

My wireless system, in my home, just stopped connecting to the internet (via Explorer).

I can get on a different wireless system, originating from who knows where but not mine.

The icon says I am connected to mine with a strong signal, but no connection.

I've tried:

1. unplugging and plugging in the router and transmitter.

2. Rebooting.

Nope!

What gives?

What type router are you using? Are you cable or DSL? If you have a modem disconnect the modem wait a minute then replug in. Can you hard wire the computer to the router via a CAT 5 cable? If so change network connections to local area connections (enable) and disable wireless connections. See if you can get internet that way.

1. Belkin.

2. Cable.

3. I can get on line fine when hard wired to the router.

4. Done that.

5. I can also get on fine when scamming someone else' wireless, like I am now.;):(

Re: Wireless Connection Problem

You probably have a problem with authentication with your own router. The OS will show 'connected' but if the router can't authenticate your wireless connection (WEP or WPA) it won't pass your internet requests. Check your WPA/WEP code. Hard resetting your router (holding in the reset button for 15 seconds) will reset the router back to factory defaults. Run a browser, enter the default IP for the router in the address line and log into the router with the default login and password. While in the router settings, check the status menu and see if you have an IP address on the WAN side of the router. If you have a WAN IP, input a WEP or WPA code , change the default router password, change the default SSID etc. Reboot and go from there. Report back on your findings. FYI, if you were running your router without encryption and you didn't change your default router login/password, a neighbor kid probably locked you out...

Re: Wireless Connection Problem

I run a Belkin router too and occasionally the same thing happens to me.
It seems to affect the web browser only.My Echoserver and ICQ remain online.
The solution is to shut down the computer, router and modem and to restart them in the reverse order. When the modem has 4 solid lights then power up the router. When that stabilizes after a couple of minutes then boot the computer again. If that does not work you can try the reset button on the router to set it back to the factory defaults and start over again.
It appears that you are not running encryption or MAC address filtering so the solution should be fairly simple it seems.
Belkin is pretty good to work with supporting their products and stand behind them quite well.I am on my third router which they replace for free if their techs determine that yours has failed.I started back in 2001 with an 802.11b which was replaced with the same unit and a few months ago I needed another one which was replaced with an 802.11g.As long as you bought it new and can verify it they will stand behind it.Good luck.Ron G

Re: Wireless Connection Problem

k, try something like this:

Open a dos command window (Start->run, type in "cmd").

In the dos command window, type ipconfig. A bunch of stuff should come up, you are interested in:

IP Address . . . . . : <your computer's IP address>
Default Gateway . . . : <your gateway's IP address>

Sounds like your router is your gateway, so the gateway address is the router's address. If you have no IP address, and/or no default gateway address, then you may be communicating on the wireless but you haven't been assigned a network address (and won't be able to get anywhere). Use start->settings->Network Connections, find your network , then "repair". That may help. If not, you should then log into your router (using a hardline) and check its wireless settings.

If you do have a gateway IP address - type that number into internet explorer as the url. This should bring up the router's configuration page. If you can do this - then you are on the network and communicating with the router. The problem is either in the router or a bit further down. So, log into the router and check it's configuration. (You did change the default password that it comes with, right? It's very easy to find the default passwords - someone else can 'take over' your router if you leave it). Some routers allow you to disable internet connections at certain times, or to certain computers/groups of computers. Check the settings...

All,

GOT IT! I did the reset and-no good.

I went in and renewed all the settings, reset again and viola!

Thanks everyone.

I will let y'all know that the geek speak (I'm impressed and admire) scared the heck outta me. I had to print it and read and re-read and re-read again.

Thanks.

Re: Wireless Connection Problem

I kind of figured that's where you were headed...just CYA with encryption and passwords...

BTW, dump the UPNP if it's an option too..
