thinking bout upgrading my current hard wired home<br />network (4 puters) to a wireless network...<br />is wireless as reliable? interferrence issues?<br />thanks in advance,<br />M.Y.

Hi MY<br /><br />Got one. Works pretty good but be aware of different standards. Mine is 11mbit which is OK for Internet but lacks when sharing files between puters where 100 or 1000 mbit is now common standards.<br /><br />Even though the range by far should cover my house, I have 'dead' spots in certain parts of the house/garage/shed where more walls (brick/concrete) needs yo be passed.<br /><br />NICs are plenty available both for PCI and PCMCIA (and USB). Some cards for laptops have an antenna that sticks out more than I like.<br /><br />My switch/transmitting base even has 4 RJ ports and a parallel printerport. Works as printserver too which is great.<br /><br />Unless your house is very large I'd recommend it if you can do with 11mbit.

I'd keep the desktop's wired.... <br /><br />Any reason to change? How often do you move a desktop computer... wireless is nice for laptops, or if you have a new machine to network and you don't want to run cat5...<br /><br />I share dsl with my brother over wireless, about 1/4 mile, but run wired inside the house to the computer.

no problems here, have 2 desktops and on laptop in the network along with printer and scanner. take laptop to garage to work on truck and boat to get Q&A of net.

ndemge are saying you have one dsl account and the wireless network reaches 1/4 mile? I have cable and my dad lives like 2 blocks down the road. do you think we could do the same thing? he is still dial up i would love to hook him up to cable for free. also would that be legal?

1/4 mile?? No Problem ...with the right antennas. Line of sight between the 2 points is good to have too. Just be sure to turn on WEP (Encryption)-beats nutt'in, turn off SSID beacon, turn on MAC address filtering etc.

i think it is legal. that's the issue with wireless cable/internet and one reason it hasn't taken off- no way for the cable/internet providers to kill us with bills. there are apartment complexes that subscribe and provide internet to all their residences. i have also read that some cities are providing it to an entire block. simply put, if you have the receiver and happen to be in the area, you get internet for free. imagine traveling with your laptop and getting high speed internet anywhere you go, free.

...what we have between our 2 houses..<br /><br />Cisco Aironet Bridges. we are using the wrong antenna right now, but it works. Have 2 yagi antanna's that are very good line of site antenna's. They are set to Bridge only, they only talk to the other bridge, so no-one can just drive by and get online. You can use the regular BestBuy accesspoints, set them to bridge mode with the right antenna and beam it down to your dad's place... line of site is important. We have trees inbetween us, in the summer, the antenna's have to be PERFECTLY aligned or we get nothing,... in the winter when the leaves are off the tree, it isn't as picky. 11mbs is a little slow when we are transfering huge files, but it sure beats the heck out of a modem or both of us paying for dsl.

hmmmm not sure we could rig up a line of site as there is about 15 houses and lots of trees between us. is that the only way to go with line of site antennaes?

We use 11mb wireless in addition to 100mb wired. It works good provided the signal strength is good, which is in about all rooms except for one.<br /><br />For ease of installation, I would suggest buying components of the same brand. Mixing is a pain when configuring WEP, which you will want to do. You do not want any other wireless user, intentionally or unintentionally using your LAN.<br /><br />Using someone else's wireless LAN is not illegal, but it may violate your ISP's acceptable use policy. Read up to be sure. My 3 year old Sprint policy does not mention it, other than stating that the service cannot be re-sold.<br /><br />Just remember one thing on "sharing" outside your home. Network bandwidth capacity is not infinite and the more you give out, the less you will have for yourself. This might be an issue of others get carried away with downloads, file sharing, etc.<br /><br />Marty

Just a note of caution:<br /><br />Read your subscription conditions. Normalle contaoins something like 'OK to hook up more pc's if they are in same household ...'<br /><br />If it was legal to share unlimited we'd all call ourself ISP's and sell connection parts to a bunch...<br /><br />Sounds right?
