hello fellow boaters i just bought a kill switch and i was wondering if i wired it right! I have a 1979 70hp johnson and i wired it between the m and m1 terminal at key switch.this will kill the engine by grounding it if it pops looose right! I left the original wires there hope this works.

the two M terminals is correct -- the switch should connect the black ground wire to the black/yellow kill wire.

[note to levi_tsk: not sure what wires you're referring to, possibly an earlier model? mid-70's & later models have a red/purple & a red/yellow, but they are the starter motor circuit, nothing to do with kill.]

There's some wiring diagrams under the top secret thread at the top of this forum. near the bottom. See if yours is there. it might show it.

your answer sounds best! the normal wires that are there stay connected right?so i can turn off engine with key.my wires are black and black and yellow stripe.so lets say a friend tries to start motor without kill switch hooked up and the m wires are grounded which normally they wouldnt be it wont mess up my mtr.thanks for the info.

right, the kill switch is parallel to the keyswitch -- if either is closed (keyswitch "off" or lanyard detached) you'll get no spark.

LOL @ "a friend" trying to start it -- it'll be yourself. Who among us hasn't been out on the lake, cranking the motor and scratching your head wondering why she won't start -- hopefully you'll realize the emergency lanyard is dangling from your belt loop *before* the battery is completely drained. ;)
