wiring a Mercury 4 stroke tach

I have a 2007 Mercury 4 stroke 40 hp engine and I'd like to add a tach just a normal tach not a smartcraft style is that possible and what wiring would I need and how should it be done

You follow the directions provided with the tach. There is a tach harness that is part of the throttle/shift control box. It connects there.

Well that was not quite the answer I was hoping for ,I have no tach yet because I don't know what will work ( that was one of my questions) there is no wiring harness at my controls to connect to ( that was the second question )

Beck,
In your engine harness at the helm, you will see several individual wires, Purple is ignition power. Black is ground. Gray is tach sender. When you get your tach, terminate each of those wires to the appropriate post on the tach (you will see an S, I, and ground is usually the center stud), and you'll be good to go. Just make sure the "pole" setting is on the correct setting...
