I have a 86 115hp evinrude. The trim tilt motor works fine and is the type with 2 wires (no ground). The problem is that somewhere there is a direct short that is not allowing the motor to be raised. I want to wire a switch on the dash direct to the trim tilt motor so that I bypass the existing relays etc. Can anyone give me an idea of how this would be best accomplished?

Re: wiring a trim tilt for remote use

Hi John....

Have you tried replacing the "UP" solenoid?

I don't believe you should bypass the relays. The two wires that go to the motor are 10ga. at the least and need to be heavy to carry the amps needed to raise and lower the engine. I would trouble shoot the existing system and repair it rather than try wiring in a new switch. Running undersize wire to the trim motor could cause the wiring to overheat and catch fire or even burn the trim motor up.

If the only switch you have is on the control handle and you have replaced the trim relays, trouble shoot the switch. May be your trouble and they aren't hard to replace.

And can you please post the Model number of your engine? I don' think 115's were available from 86' to 89'. Maybe yours is an 85? Thanks!
