Can anyone provide me with a wiring diagram for this motor or provide assistance. I have a clymer manual but it is too broad. Mostly what I need assistance with is the ignition. Thanks in advance.

Re: wiring help, 1962 evinrude lark

Most of my problems are in getting info on the motor. I got another thread going but nobody has replied in a while so I figured I would start a new thread specifically for the electrical (I apologize for my impatientce). I only have the motor, no regulator, factory controls, or any junction boxes. I have been doing my homework and plan on using switches to control the shift coils. Also planned on buying a regulator to utilize the charging system. So far I haven't gotten very far on the wiring but the diagram helps tremendously, clymer manual was of no help at all. So as of right now I need to find a regulator, starter switch, check to verify starter selinoid is a marine type. I think once I locate those parts I should be able to get the wiring finished up. I know that there are a few other things that aren't quite clear but I can't think of them right now (too excited over wiring diagram). Thank you much for your help if you have any tips or see any flaws in my plan let me know.

Ah, sorry I never saw your first post. I see you've figured out how to reel us in by throwing some info in the topic heading though. :)

Looks like you're on the right track, but perhaps we can help speed you along a bit. A regulator for a 1960 Ford Falcon can be used to replace the original one. You will also need a solenoid (one for an outboard, they're wired a little different from an auto one). And a couple fuses. What do you want to use for an ignition switch? A keyswitch or a pushbutton?

In regards to making a shifter switch, make sure your setup doesn't allow both the forward and reverse gears to be engaged at the same time. I personally don't like the idea of a three position toggle switch because it's too easy to fly from forward to reverse by accident.
I don't think there's much you can do about it, but it would be good if you could somehow prevent the switches from being operated if the throttle is advanced much.
I drew this diagram for my 28hp. It's a little different from your 40hp but might help a bit in reading that other schematic:
http://files.filehosting.org/pr12156.pdf

To address a question you had in your last post, it's pretty easy to identify whether you have the correct solenoid or not. An autmotive one will have the little terminals labled 'S' and 'I' while an outboard one will not have them labeled at all. If you want to be sure, just measure the resistance between the little terminals. The reading should be low but not zero.

I found a regulator specifically for the motor but it is a bit pricey $90. Got any advice on where to get a regulator for a falcon from. I would like to use a key switch for the ignition will a standard ignition switch work as long as it has the same number of contacts. I agree with you on the toggle switch, I am planning on using a 3 position selector switch with neutral being the center contact. You really got the ball rolling on my project, now I just need to get out and do it.

Well I finally have some spare time tommorrow to work on the wiring, and I got the voltage regulator but there is no ground connection so am I to assume that the metal bracket needs to be grounded.

Alright I finally got everything wired up and man am I happy, took it out on the river yesterday ran pretty good. The boat has a hard time planeing and it died twice but I suspect that was because of the nose of the boat being up in the air causing the fuel to slosh in the tank it started right up after dying. Well now I want to install a tachometer so I know that I am in my motors powerband and not running in the redline. My question is how do you hook one up and what is a good brand/type to use.
