Hi, I have a 1986 Baja islander with a Mercruiser 170 3.7 in it. I bought the boat from a good friend after he blew the voltage regulator from having two amps wired up on the battery. Smh, now I have converted it to an alternator but I can’t get a spark. I know I’m getting gas, alternator turns and the boat just tries to start but no fire. I have attached pictures of how the starter, starter solenoid and oem wire loom is. Hopefully someone can help. Btw the red wire with purple stripe and the orange wire came off the old regulator. The new red wire is the alternator

for your wiring to the alternator.

B terminal on alternator to the B terminal on the starter or you can go direct to the battery
Ign terminal on alternator connected to purple wire (ignition)

regarding your boat, did you service the points?

This is a one wire kit. I was unable to get a spark when wired directly to battery. What am I to do with the other two wires from the volt reg that are now hooked to nothing. Also I got rid of the old points and did an electonic igntition.

Also he had this red wire on the negative feed on the battery. Doesn’t seem right to me but it’s not long enough to reach the positive

I would start over and start comparing everything to the wiring diagram in the mercruiser manual.
