Wiring older tachometer to Newer Engine

I have a 1979 Skeeter Wrangler I am about to start using again. It originally had a 1980 Mercury 150. It now has a 2003 Mercury 150. I am wondering how to connect the wiring to the tachometer. It has a 5 pin connector from the tachometer that was used to connect to the 1980 control box. My newer engine doesn't have this 5 pin connector. Can these connectors be bought or can I cut the existing 5 pin connector and connect my new engine wiring to it?

I hope this makes sense - Thanks for any help.

Re: Wiring older tachometer to Newer Engine

A standard tach has three connections. These are +12VDC, ground and stator signal. See if you can find a place to access the grey wire. That is the stator signal. If so, then find some +12VDC and a source of ground and you are in business.

Motors are usually set up to use a stator, so I would be surprized if it is hard to do.

Thanks for your response.

Using the wiring diagram show in my shop manual I think I have it figured out. I see the gray wire you are referring to and I am redoing the other wiring to get power and ground to everything.

Thanks again.
